Power off after use?

I only print occasionally as a hobby, and always unload filament and switch the printer off after use.

Do any of you guys actually leave the printer on all the time even when not printing? Any harm in doing this?

I guess power consumption would be minimal?

I can't see doing either will do any harm, but if you're not going to use it no point in using the energy.  Turn it off.

I'd probably skip unloading the filament if it were me.

I unload and seal bag in its bag with desiccant after reading the absorption and humidity scare stories! Even though its only PLA!

The proper status for a 3D printer is: Printing.  Ie. working and using power.

But if you are not going to print again for a few hours then unload and switch off.  I generally dry filament before ziplock storing with freshly dried dessicant so drying immediately before use is minimalised.

Cheerio,

I leave the filament loaded but always turn off the mains power. This is a good habit for any appliances you use infrequently. The safest electrical circuit is one that's not energised.

RE: Power off after use?

If I am not going to be using for some time, ie a few days, then I will cut the filament off a couple of cm above the extruder and then seal and store the rest of the filament and then power off after the printer has cooled down.

The reason I always leave a stub of filament in the extruder is that it stops any possibility of something getting into the feed path that shouldn't.

Next time I'm printing I then just load and purge the stub through and feed in the new filament as its loading.

I'm certainly known for having left the printers on for days even if they were not in use (with no negative effects) but, yes, it's certainly more eco-friendly to turn them off.
