Ouch! Cooling print - never had this happen before.

Although not on a Prusa, I thought I would report it, as I've never had anything like this happen before.

This print is (or rather was) best described as a dress rehearsal test print of the section of a laptop case, the top part that holds the screen.

It was printed with FormFutura ApolloX ASA, which has always been well-behaved for me.

After the print finished I waited about an hour for the print and build plate to get close to room temperature.

It was still a bit sticky, so I placed it into the refrigerator, not the freezer, ca. 36F/2C for a half hour or so, something I've done on occasion with the plates of both the Prusa and the Ultimaker, and here is what I found.

Oops. That'll teach you patience! 😄 😴

Probably still too warm inside.

That's more along the lines of something you might see with PETG.

I'm trying to do a post-mortem on this, and usually an hour cooling down, on that printer, is enough to get the print to release from the build plate.

I'm thinking that this is probably a sign of a lack of strength in the piece, particularly in the thinnest part behind the screen, and I need to just suck it up and increase the thickness in that area a couple of mm, as well as the topmost wall.

Anyway, I am, literally, back to the drawing board this minute and second.

I thought about doing it in PETg, but for some reason, PETg was not officially supported on that printer until recently, and IMAO the numbers are not yet totally dialed in on their profiles and such.

On the other hand, ASA is still not officially supported on that machine still, but everyone (myself included) reports good luck starting with the ABS profile and boosting the temperatures a bit.

I was referring to the crack, that's something you might expect from PETG, not ASA, and certainly not from ABS.

In another thread, it was noted that ASA tends to shrink.

I've have not done many ASA prints, but for this one I did use a liberal dose of Layerneer as an adhesion booster (slash) release agent (slash) warp preventer, and I wonder if during the stress of cooling, the material itself cracked, as the point of less resistance, before it released from the glass build plate.

RE:

@Everyone

It is for all intent and purpose the same as ABS it shrinks a bit less, but only a Bit. I frankly only move towards ASA when I need the UV resistance it offers relative to colors other then Black where ABS is concerned. As well it only offers less shrinking relative to brand (material mix). You know people fall for this type of crap hook line and sinker all the time. Remember when PETG came out as a popular new plastic? It was touted as hydrophobic, Yeah right? anything but that is true, I still have boxes of filament with that printed on them, as one of the great things about it. on top of that I will bring up the issues with PETG be very brake able, on average it is not! mechanically sound as ABS, or PLA which it extremely strong, and people are convinced its brittle because  they read once that it was. Lies, learn for yourselves, the industry is about selling you on a product. I have compared it to the nutrition industry, If you have a hard time finding information about something, it's because it benefits the sellers of whatever the thing is, and now you have  to fight your way through the BS and educate yourself's, to the point of a fight to know the truth. Do Not Take the influencers word for it. Educate yourselves.

Good Luck

LOL, I can remember the 'PETg is the new PLA' hype.   😉

It really blows me away what things have become, and why?

I've been printing a fair bit of ASA lately, and to my very unsophisticated nose it smells a lot less than ABS. Now, whether that's a good thing or not is debatable, I guess — maybe I'm getting poisoned without knowing it… At least it's a less stinky death 🙂
