Original Prusa Housing planned?

Hi all,

I need an enclosure... Unfortunately. My large PETG prints warp and I found that I could prevent this, if I put a large cardboard box over the printer... But this is uncomfortable, dirty and you cannot have a look at the print.

As the Stratasys patent does not exist anymore: is there a plan from Prusa to add a real fitting original Prusa enclosure (available through shop)?

I am not sure, if the "Lack-enclosure" is a good way to go...?!?

MY perfect enclosure would:

- not increase the foot print of the printer and is light

- does not hinder reaching all parts for service and cleaning

- keeps filament dry

- keeps electronics outside

- not too expensive

- keeps drives outside

- is heatable

..prioisation in exaxtly this order 😉

What would you recommend? Build Lack or wait for something official? Will it come as upgrade?

All the best

I believe Prusa said some time ago that they did not intent do make enclosures for printers.

About the same time someone (Not sure if it was Prusa, ) suggested a simple draft excluding cube design

Like this.   it comes with a detatchable front panel to make loading and unloading easier.
Be careful and measure your space, some of these cubes are large enough for people to get inside... 🙂

regards Joan

Alright... Thanks!!

...so I will stay with either Lack or your suggestion...

Tendency to Lack (footprint, accessibility, watch /supervise prints)

@dongle

The lack works very well and they are dirt cheap.

Personally I went with this:

https://www.amazon.ca/Foldable-Dimmable-3000K-6500K-Adjustable-Backdrops/dp/B07TBCY15R/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=amzdeal+photo+studio&qid=1620417417&sr=8-7

Here's my reasoning for choosing this over something like a Lack enclosure:

  • Zero work (sometimes you don't have time to DIY)
  • Fits my Prusa MINI+ (I think there are larger, similar models that fit the MK3S)
  • Compact (can be installed on any table or workbench, no need to take floor space with additional furniture)
  • Can be folded flat and stored when not in use. Does not take much storage space.
  • It's a photo studio (built-in LEDs with color temperature and brightness adjustment, etc.) which you can also use to take nice photos of your prints
  • Better looking and potentially takes less space than a white photo tent (depends on the model)
  • The cost is similar if not lower than buying Lack tables, plexiglass and using filament to print the parts

Note that I just received mine, so I haven't tried using it as an enclosure yet (however I've seen other people using the same kind of photo studio as for that purpose). I have some PC blend coming in soon so I'll get to try it soon enough.

Thanks - but just 37 minutes too late 🙂

Just ordered 3mm PC sheets for the lack Version 1 (50€ inc shipping) and started the print of first set of parts 3 minutes ago..

Anyway: thanks for trying to help!!

You may want to return your order and get a decent enclosure, not pressed IKEA cardboard. There are lots of examples here in the forum using server racks with glass door and removable sides.

I disagree.  The Lack tables work perfectly well.  Mine have been in use for 3 years.

It´s your good right to disagree. I for one will however not even begin to consider a LACK table to provide sufficient housing for a printer which can reach up to 280 degrees C and which will run for days and nights. Try setting a LACK table on fire and then try the same with a steel / tempered glass enclosure. Given that a decent 19 inch rack costs not more than about €150 and is available from the second hand market for a fraction of that cost, I fail to recognize any advantage of the LACK.

No enclosure will survive a printer fire.  The best way to prevent a fire is good maintenance and not an enclosure.  To get a "proper" enclosure, it will cost you more than the printer.

Can´t see where I claimed that an enclosure would prevent a fire, so don´t twist my words please.

Sorry, misread your note. Well, no enclosure will survive a fire, right, but a metal casing will not burn itself and set the room ablaze.

Ok.  The lack works well.  I have a print farm of 17 printed and the lack tables serve me well.  I am thrifty and they just simply work.  Do what you must, but lack tables provide enough enclosure to print up to PC Blend.
