I totally agree. Opt-in would be a better way to go. Even if PR developed this hub compliant to current regulations, this is not how people like to be treated.

Regarding privacy and location; the idea of showing the world how many printers Prusa has sold is a great marketing tool for them, but showing even postal codes is an invasion of privacy. By nation, state, and perhaps by city may be acceptable based on population; but there will be cases where it exposes a person to some scrutiny they may not want. Small towns and such: a printer owner may be the only "nerd" there and easily targetable by criminals or just random attention that is unwanted.

As for asking an attorney in advance to gain confidence an action is a good idea or even legal is questionable.  If you needed to ask an attorney, you were already feeling guilty about crossing a line.

Adding to my previous post: instead of pins that might randomly indicate a single building or address, aggregate numbers to a single large radius patch. Make the patch radius equal to the area a 100kt nuke would encompass, centered on a public structure like the town clock/spire, Dom, courthouse, etc.

I’d like a simple way to import things I’ve already posted to Thingiverse. Print instructions, extra materials, license reference with attribution where applicable...

I would like that too, a simple way to import from Thingiverse 😀

Thingiverse allows you to see how many people are looking and downloading the published models - this gives a good feedback as a designer. I cannot find a similar functionality.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

Would be really nice to have a "collection" feature like Thingverse has. I already see a few prints I'd like to get to, but I'm not likely remember them when I can get to them.

This ++

Agree, This ++++

I think a web browser bookmark would work; however... I'd rather not have to mess with those.

So this will be like Thingiverse but for Prusa?

Prusaverse?

I like the idea, I have some models I could add as well.

Quick follow-up on geolocation: It looks like Team Prusa has been working this problem. Today I notice that, while my town shows the presence of a printer, once you zoom in to street level, those gray dots disappear. I'm not sure if the resolution has changed, but previously, I could follow the gray dot down to a pretty specific part of town. This is a good thing to be focused on, so I'm glad to see it.

Did people stop rating items? All 5-star, all low single digit counts.

Hmm. I have been advised that the change is cosmetic, and that the underlying data is still exposed using developer tools. Bummer. I'm not savvy enough with the dev tools to dig into this much, but I do hope that the fuzzing isn't being done entirely within the user interface based on full data.

Update: My North-American-centric view did not stop to think that postcodes might be street or even building specific in some places. I too would be pretty annoyed if there was a flag directly on my house. As nice as "find the local prusa owners" is... it's also likely to result in some "hey, this guy has a thousand-dollar printer, let me scout and rob his house" kind of situation.

I do not know about North America, but ZIP codes in Europe will probably always cover thousands of inhabitants. The one I live in covers around 20k of people, as example.

Unless you are a huge business or such, like Microsoft, Verizon, or the IRS, zip codes cover thousands of people in the US as well.  Some of the larger cities have a few zip codes, but there are millions of people in our cities.  Heck, the population of the New York megalopolis is almost double the population of the entire country of Sweden...

But yeah, no individual houses have their own zip codes.  Even the US President does not have his own zip code.

This is not true globally. And that is the crux of the problem.

There have been reports from people of countries where their postal code is specific to a building or small block of buildings. Canadian postal codes are quite variable in this; they may cover a large region or only a single  block depending on how they were allotted. There have also been reports of remote enough locations that it's pretty easy to narrow down because there are so few houses in said code area.

Right. UK postcodes cover about a dozen houses. It's probably easy to know who the nerd is out of a dozen houses.

... just look for the house with 3d printed mailbox brackets and numbers? 😀

Or the one that's on fire, if they own(ed) an A8.

It would be nice that if when uploading ZIP files containing GCode or STLs you wish for them to remain as a ZIP package. It would make for printer specific variant packages a lot easier.

Good idea. I hadn't thought of that, but it does make sense. I guess currently the best way would be to prefix the files for each printer with a printer specific identifier and let the downloaders sort through the cruft. Not exactly ideal...

I would like to see the following improvements in the Prints site:

  • More characters allowed in tags: specifically "_" & "-"
  • Photos should respect the rotation flag
  • STL preview in the files section
  • Support for "other" file types (cad, text, etc.)
  • Grouping of files would be nice (like folders)
  • Makes section (maybe adding photo support to the "user print files" section)
  • Statistics: views/downloads/comments/makes

Not really 3D model related, but a similar database for us to share slicer profiles and configurations would be very helpful.

Customizer?

I really enjoy publishing customizable designs using OpenSCAD, an open source language used to generate physical things, and I'd love to move all my designs from Thingiverse here. https://www.thingiverse.com/laird/designs .

Is there any chance of the PrusaPrinters site adding a capability like Customizer? The capability is built into OpenSCAD, documented at https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/WIP#Customizer .

https://github.com/tbuser wrote Thingiverse's Customizer, and has several relevant open source projects, in particular CloudScad.

Would like to see .f3d support for Fusion 360 files.

Fusion can export step, but in all cases, if I'm able to use the original project file, that is greatly preferred.
