Not a bad idea. However, if they add an OpenSCAD customizer, I would request they not add the ability to post those customized models automatically, as the TV customizer does. I really don't need to see 100s of variations of a simple box or similar, where the only difference is size or shape.…  The whole point of the customizer in my eyes is to allow YOU to generate a, well, custom model for YOUR specific needs, and posting that custom model for everyone else to "enjoy" just serves to accelerate the entropy death of the universe.

I am assuming you are referring to the Remixes in ThingiVerse that the Customizer generates. I understand what you are saying that seeing a bunch of similar models displayed is not that useful. At least, they are grouped under Remixes and you don't have to go down that rabbit hole.  🙂 From what I have used so far on the beta version of the library and generator, I have not seen anything similar to the Remix Gallery.

I have added a record to his  requests database that he consider indexing Printables.Com in the future and it appears he has already thought about indexing other sites. I think one of his goals is to provide a library where OpenSCAD models can be collected in the library he has created so all the useful OpenSCAD scripts on ThingiVerse will not just disappear one day.  He has already opened his system up to others who would like to experiment with storing their OpenSCAD models in the Models@MakeWithTech library. This looks like an encouraging concept that could disrupt the entropy of lost models.

Let me start with stating that I am aware that Prusa can't do much about it, but this is directed more towards the community itself. It caught my attention especially recently so I did a small research on one concrete example and asking myself if that is really how it is supposed to be. My own take is that I can understand if people are not always making an in depth research if what they are remixing is really the original but if you remix someone's model who licenses under the condition of getting credit one should give credit. That's the least one could do. Isn't it?

In 2016 Tom Davis uploaded a model of a baby groot planter. I am not sure if he is truly the original creator but it looks to me like it. He did it under the license that it is free to print but exclusive to myminifactory and remixing is not allowed. ( https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-baby-groot-flower-pot-gardens-of-the-galaxy-2-26442)

A year later Fanplastico uploaded a "Baby groot pot (remix)" of an identical looking model to Thingiverse, which seems to consist of it having been split into 3 parts for improved printability. A legitimate remix IMHO (if the original designer allowed remixing) but no credit to the original designer is given.

From there on there are numerous "remix-remixes", some of them giving credit to the original remixer, some don't give any credit.

Fast forward, the model in remix or identical form is uploaded on Prusaprinter/Printables. Someone posts a (really nicely done) make as design, without marking it as remix or giving any credit and entering a design contest on the page where one can win a spool of Prusament. Default sort order seems to have changed for me. It now sorts by likes instead of latest uploads. I am finding this really frustrating.

I would love to see a feature added showing the max dimensions for any print. Often I have to download a file before I know whether it will fit on the mini etc.

The purpose of the grey circles on the map is to give a very broad overview of where members of our community are located (think of something akin to a heatmap of userbase density). It was never the goal to identify each printer's precise address. It makes sense to join up and communicate with locals since we want people to know that there are other printers in the region.

RE:

Until a couple of weeks ago I was able to put unicode characters like🧵 in the title of my published models. This does not work anymore. Such characters are now recognized as "invalid".
I liked this feature and now it is gone! Why was that changed? I want it back! 😥

In all fairness to @gravity-2, there's no printables.com repo on github. I've suggested several times to create a new printables.com forum under "Prusa software & Others", to no avail. There's a printables.com subreddit, but it doesn't see much traffic and again, it's Reddit, not quite as inane as Twitter, but getting increasingly close.

The best place for feature requests on printables is the "share your feedback" tab on the page itself or an email to Prusa support.

It's so good that even the 'competition' (Bambu) are using it to host their designs https://www.printables.com/model/328281-the-starry-night-vincent-van-gogh . Also interesting that the only file (.3MF) they have provided file will only work in Bambu Studio, so much for open source file formats!

Bambu Slicer is a fork of Prusa Slicer, it reads and writes all the same file formats ... except they seem to have gone to some trouble to bend the .3MF internal .model format, presumably in order to pull off just this sort of stunt.  It looks like it should be fairly easy to extract something Prusa Slicer will swallow but I'm not going to put in the effort for a few flat squiggles.

I can't dowload and test Bambu Slicer as they don't provide a linux build and I don't care to set up a full compile.

Cheerio,

Cheerio,

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

In all fairness, 3mf is a "standard" that isn't much of one as it allows vendors to add stuff that others can't properly interpret. I haven't used Cura in ages but way back when, trying to load a Prusaslicer 3mf with modifiers resulted in those modifiers to be interpreted as part of the model in Cura. Never looked at Bambu slicer, never will (well, unless I get a Bambu some day…🙂) but I guess it's the same thing. Extensions that are legit according to the specs but not interpretable by other slicers.

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

Printables continues to get better (despite the occasional hiccup), so many thanks to the team developing and supporting the site. There are, however, some minor aspects which I find bothersome, so I thought I would mention them here to see if I am alone in this, or perhaps other members feel the same:

First, the extensive use of light grey text on a white background, which makes screen reading more difficult than it needs to be. Even in Dark Mode there is not much improvement. The use of grey text also seems to be somewhat random. A simple fix would be to use all black text, but there there are other ways to improve legibility that I am sure the Printables tech team knows more about than me.

Second, access to functions on the site are hidden unless one does a mouse-over on every part of the screen to see what text or icons are "active." There seems to be a vague relationship to the use of black text, but this is not consistent. I'm guessing that the average (or new) user is unaware of many of the capabilities of the site until they realize they have to go on an easter egg hunt to see what is possible. Personally, I would prefer a drop down menu which includes all available functions, as opposed to sprinkling them all over the screen in multiple formats.

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

I'm not sure I understand the new changed prusameter reward system, where less is given for popular models.

Last night I uploaded three images (makes) for three models that had only a few downloads and few makes. It gave 10, 8 and 2 prusameter respectively (in that order)...?

Is it because I collect my makes and upload them at the same time?

The models were printed during December, but I always combine the work of editing images and uploading so I don't have to spend so much time on the administrative work of uploading and writing text for the images. It would be nice if there were some guidelines for what subtracts (I know you can read a tool-tip, but didn't get much smarter from it).

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

The metric is not only "popular models" but multiple things. Print time might be a factor for example. Quick prints might get less than bigger ones. Prints that use more filament might get more PrusaMeters, etc. And yes, it might depend on how many makes you made in a timeframe. It might be days or even a month. A lot of people tried to hack the system by uploading a lot of tiny makes in a day or two to collect prusameters because they needed a new spool.

People really need to stop seeing Prusameters as "payment" for "work". It's a reward - a little thank you to give a little appreciation back. not something to collect to get free stuff.

I like that perspective. The only way to get serious Prusameters anyway is to produce models that many people download, every month. And that's certainly not bookmarks or doorknobs or tessellating patterns (fool that I am, I thought bookmarks was the low point of the flash contests…) And certainly not posting makes.
