I'd consider a blog post for people on how to avoid incurring the wrath of the big corporate fists.

Do we know DMCA was involved? If so, that at least tells us something about how to start fighting this.

Do we know DMCA was involved? If so, that at least tells us something about how to start fighting this.

If Honda had their lawyers send a notice, this is the legal basis that they would use. It's established law and has been decided in the courts. It would make no sense to engage a lawyer to do it any other way. They literally just have to send a notice. While DMCA deals with copyright, there are similar "protections" for Trademarks. The deck is heavily stacked in favor of the copyright owner (aka big corporation). You're more than welcome to try to fight it, but pay careful attention to Step 2:

If you aren't totally honest in your counter-notice (i.e., you think you may be infringing on a copyright), then you'd likely be committing perjury.

In addition, if the complaining party has a good infringement claim, sending a counter-notice may actually trigger a lawsuit. If there's a strong possibility that you're infringing, then a lawsuit wouldn't end well for you.

Remember, the DMCA creates liability for knowingly making false claims in a DMCA takedown notice or counter-notice. The other party can win damages, court costs and attorney's fees that stem from a wrongful notice.

In other words, it can quickly turn into an expensive legal minefield. Also keep in mind that you're asking Prusa to bear this risk, not yourselves. I can see where the smart business decision is just to comply, particularly when the copyright or trademark holder has a clear case.

I do very much like the suggestion of Prusa writing a blog post to describe the limitations that DMCA puts on creators, what creators can do to stay clear of it, and what Prusa's compliance process is.

If anyone wants to continue to discuss "fighting" this, maybe a new discussion thread would help keep it focused? This is well established law, happens all the time to sites like YouTube , and I for one get little joy out of flogging a dead horse...

Something interesting I noticed on the site today, not sure if it's new or it just hasn't come up for me before - there's some weird 'splitting' of the filenames being done in the HTML that actually breaks text search on the page. For example, I was trying to print one of the nozzle drawers from https://www.printables.com/model/17862-ultimate-drawer-system/files - there's over 200 files there, so I tried to ctrl-f and search for 'nozzle' to find the ones I wanted. Oddly, there were no results. After scrolling and finding it manually, I tried to figure out what was going on - it seems the filename (in this case, "Drawer_Nozzles_B_-1U.stl" is in some sort of filename-shrink element where the actual text of it is split between two sub-divs, one with the string "Drawer_Noz" and the second with " nles_B_-_1U.stl" - meaning that any attempt to search for part of the name that's split between those two divs will fail.

As an aside, I work on web programming as my day job and often have to deal with accessibility - this also appears to break the site for anyone using a screen reader. The element should be read as something like "Drawer underscore nozzles underscore B..." but instead is read as "Drawer underscore noz zee el ee es underscore B..."

Since the new printables.com is meant to be more printer agnostic add the ability to suggest new printer models for inclusion in the list of what printers you own.

I'd personally like to see Artillery Sidewinder X1 and MakerGear M2 to the FFF list and EPAX X1-4k to the SLA list.

RE:

I've also noticed that when I try to use Pocket to bookmark one of the model pages on printables.com the resulting bookmark has a title of "This site requires Javascript".  While I get that the real functionality of the site requires Javascript I would suggest that the ability to use any bookmarking system to save a link to your site is very desireable so maybe at least return the correct page title for the model page so a bookmark won't be useless.

That looks like a problem with Pocket, since the model pages have the correct title on page load.

It seems the page checks for Javascript availability and only updates the page title if Javascript is available, which it isn't in a program like Pocket or I would imagine any bookmarking website.  So if you just used your browser with Javascript enabled to test this the test wasn't valid.

Here is another idea for Printables : How about adding a section for custom gcode? This would be a collection of gcode "snippets" or macros which can be inserted using the "insert custom gcode" capability of PrusaSlicer. Having a searchable collection pf pre-written gcode would greatly increase the value and usefulness of this capability.

Whilst it may seem like a good idea initially, the issues of using the same gcode across multiple printer brands / models would need to be considered, who would support issues with the snippets? Additionally there is the ever present risk that any individual could post incorrect / malicious code (potentially causing printer damage, fires  etc.) that newcomers would copy and paste blindly without realising the implications.

Gorden - all of the issues you mention already exist with gcode posted for printable models. I am not saying that these are not real issues, just that they are addressable.

The concerns you list are pretty much standard for any DYI project. I am not trying to minimize the difficulties, but I am sure the admins of Printables are quite familiar with these kinds of content moderation issues.

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

I noticed another issue the other day when I posted my first design to the website - the only way to specify the printer settings you used is to upload a gcode file for it.  I'm surprised that uploading gcode is even a thing at all, but I guess until now it was meant to be brand specific.  Normally, running someone else's gcode is something you'd never do and if the site is becoming brand agnostic (yeah!) then assumptions of printer or slicer should be phased out.  I think the website needs to have a panel on the upload a design screen where you can specify things like layer height, infill %, supports, recommended filament type.

sprior - Doesn't the 3MF file format do what you want?

Nope, the website currently only seems to collect print settings from "presliced files" which would not be 3mf, but either .gcode or the Prusa specific .sl1 files - both of which would be pretty machine specific.  I am sure very few people would find the gcode file I created for my 350mm Voron 2.4 printer very useful.

You can save 3mf files along with your model, and these contain configuration information. And of course other people can download these files. I confess I am not clear how or if this configuration information translates among various printers.

What you say is true about 3mf files, but the printables website only seems to fill in the print settings displayed on their website from the .gcode or .sl1 file, not .3mf.

Support for OpenSCAD customizer

I've just imported a large number of customizable designs into Printables. They're written in OpenSCAD, which has a "customizer" capability built in, originated on Thingiverse as their "Customizer" and then implemented in the open source OpenSCAD language and IDE. Is there any chance for Printables to add support for OpenSCAD Customizer? It's a very popular technique (on Thingiverse) for allowing non-designers to make personalized things to 3d print.

OpenSCAD is http://www.openscad.org.

Customizer is OpenSCAD User Manual/Customizer - Wikibooks, open books for an open world https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/Customizer  and Featured Customizer by MakerBot - Thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/customizer

RE:

Printables does not have a customizer and it would be nice if it did but there is another solution. It would be nice if this system would also work with Printables. The YouTuber [Make With Tech] has installed the OpenSCAD software on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and has created his own front-end customizer software that will search for .scad files on Thingiverse. You can then render the file using his system like Thingiverse used to do when it worked. You can find out more by looking at the YouTube video on [Make With Tech] area titled [Customize 3d Printing Models with your Browser] on March 18, 2022. I would start at 4:58 to get to the section that talks about this system.
