NEW! Prusament PETG Carbon Fiber now available!

This filament just showed up in the Prusa3D store! Super-excited to get this filament! It is twice the price of their normal PETG (those are some expensive carbon fibers!) But really looking forward to seeing how improved the high temperature resistance is.

I was hoping the Prusament PETG Matte Black would be more matte, but it's still quite glossy. If this is anything like the hardly-ever-available Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber, it's going to be a really nice way to get nicer looking prints without having to go way down on the layer height to hide lines.

Considering that the use of carbon fiber is a bit of overkill for 3D printing due to the inherent issues with layers decreasing strength, using less expensive fibers like fiberglass should give us most of the benefit with out the cost bump.  Maybe I have the cost drivers wrong, but it should work out.

Glass filled ABS would be interesting.

RE:

Would it be possible to print this material with a 0.25 nozzle? Or would this not be possible due to the fibers? The part doesn't need to be super strong, this would be 100% for aesthetic purposes, and also to create a more high quality feel when you touch the material.

Probably wisest to go to 0.6mm to reduce clogging risk.  CF will make little difference to strength, it will increase stiffness and as a side effect reduce warping.  The parts should be more wear resistant too but for cosmetics ... paint will usually be better.

Cheerio,

I’ve been printing for a while Prusament PA11-CF with a 0.4 nozzle and, so far, no problem at all with clogs ( knocking on  wood). That said, 0.6mm, seem a safer bet for filaments with solid fibers, Certainly I wouldn’t risk trying anything smaller than 0.4, specially with expensive nozzles like ruby or TC.  In fact, Prusa Slicer default profile for the MK3/S/+ with a 0.25 nozzle excludes all filaments containing fibers.

Why do you think it is overkill?

Of all the materials I've ever used, PC-CF is the strongest one. In my designs, I often find the need for stiffer and more resistant materials so PC-CF always has it place.
