My print melted on my window sill

Hi Prusa forum.

A few years ago I printed a thin-walled thingy in black PLA and placed it on the window sill on a hot summer day (Sweden so relatively weak sun). A few hours later, the object had completely deformed and collapsed in on itself.

Does anyone else have any experience of overcoming this that they wish to share? Does non-black PLA stay cool enough to not deform? Is switching to PETG enough to completely overcome this issue, or do you have to go with ASA or something even more technical? Any other thoughts?

This is common when placed in sunshine inside a parked car... it happens when the PLA exceeds 60°C, the glass transition temperature.

Black, of course, absorbs heat so printing in white or pastel might be enough.  The glass transition temperature of PETG is around 100°C so unless you can boil water on the window sill that should be OK.

Cheerio,

In this use case that you have just save yourself a problems and just print with ASA.

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

I've definitely had PETG get soft on me in the car in the summer. These days I print mostly ASA or PC-CF for outdoor use, PETG may be fine, but PLA I don't trust.
