F them.

This had better be an early April fools joke or a mod on a new printer.  If you are this late on the XL, and you are teasing a new printer…. Have you learned NOTHING?

WTFudge

Ok, so how long in your opinion would be an acceptable time for Prusa to wait between starting to ship the XL, and releasing an update of the I3?

Uhm, this is a teaser, and they are MONTHS away from filing day one orders.  If they want to release- as in sell an update- they can do it today.  If they are going to push out that they will sell one in the future- heck no.

dig yourself out of the XL hole before you start digging another hole.

"this is a teaser"  ..  well.. no - my MK4 will be delivered in 2-3 Weeks.

LOL...  This comment didn't age well.  I never said they were filling all the day one orders quickly; I said the XL was shipping, and I asked how long you feel as though would be appropriate to wait before announcing another new product.  You never answered my question.  What would have been the appropriate time to wait between starting to ship the XL, and announcing the Mk4, since that seems to be a bone of contention.

RE: MK4?

Agh.  Just finished assembling my MK3 a few days ago.  If I had known this was coming out, I would have waited and ordered it.  It would have been nice if Prusa had informed me that there was a new and better printer in the same price range being released.

They got me too. I ordered 2, 34 days ago, and an mmu2s. Also, you have 60 days to return it and even the kits go back in one piece, it’s an option I am toying with.

RE: MK4?

I saw someone mention that they were offered a $150 voucher for future purchases (presumably if they kept the printer).

Myself, I figure that I spent $800 for a printer that's now priced at $650. The upgrade to an MK4 will cost $580, meaning that I would be buying an MK4 for effectively $1380. I can send my MK3S+ back and I'm out $100+ for shipping both ways. And to get an MK4, I'll have to pay $800 and shipping again.

I just got a Bambu Lab X1C Combo for $100 more than it would cost me to keep my MK3S+ and upgrade it to an MK4. And that doesn't count ... yes, shipping.

I love my MK3S+. I built it myself with great care. It's a beautiful printer. It's quiet enough to sing me to sleep. But I'm starting to question my decision to stay with Prusa at all.

Once I return the MK3S+ and get a refund, I'll have spent $100+ for shipping and have nothing to show for it. No special deals, no "thank you" discounts, nothing. There wasn't a single effort made to retain me as a customer. I had truly wished for a $100 upgrade offer to an MK4 (just the upgrade kit, not a whole new printer), but all I'm left with is regret over spending $100+ on shipping my printer halfway around the world twice. I haven't even had the printer for 2 months.

I don't know what to think. Maybe I'll just buy someone else's MK3S+ in a few months when the value drops. I have my X1C and may consider a Voron or a "The 100" build. I'm just so disappointed by the Prusa transaction. But c'est la vie.

I contacted them today about a voucher to upgrade and they told me no.

Wow. But sometimes things happen for a reason. I felt like I'd spent too much for my X1C, but the same capability (speed, enclosure, multi-material) would cost close to $2k with Prusa. I liked my Prusa, but I'm on a (cough .. cough .. wife .. cough) budget and $2k is into the riding mower price range.

RE: MK4?

Oh I couldn't imagine something that expensive. The XL would be a dream but my wife would bust a gasket if she saw that price tag "For a WHAT???
" I can hear it now...

RE: MK4?

Hahaha well understood. The X1C was only about $1500 and prints 4-6x the speed that my MK3S+ prints. But it's not a quiet printer. It's just a work printer. Not bedroom-friendly. lol

RE: MK4?

I won't be looking at an upgrade either.  I am new to owning my own 3D printer so I will be doing lots of experimenting and like today, made mistakes.  I will do upgrades on my MK3s+ as I get better and when I am ready for a second printer, I will see what is around.  Like a computer, a better model will always be around the corner, so how long do you wait?

Just saw a review of the new Prusa slicer and how it makes working with a 0.6mm nozzle as good as a 0.4 nozzle at less time.  Also reading about CHT nozzles which also cut time.  Simple upgrades that will help.  I still wish Prusa had mentioned that there was a new printer coming in a few weeks when I ordered and offered to let me purchase it instead.

RE: MK4?

Prusaslicer 2.6 has given me odd prints from time to time.  Really wide extrusions widths that almost seemed comical.

Maybe I’ll update my MK3S&MMU2s to the Mk3.9 standard.  THe nozzle/calibration thing is just too interesting.

My MMU2s is just haunted.  I might try it after I update the MK3s to see how it works.

But right now I plan on buying a MK4 kit and a MMU3, and then getting the 5 head XL that I have on order.  I have two Minis, one in ‘+” config with a REVO mini, the other stock- which I might donate or take to work for side projects.

Very true. At some point, one must make the leap of faith and choose whatever is the best option at the moment.

I'm curious, how many people are pissed because  they have to wait for an XL, knowing their Nextrusder is going to a MK4 (avalable in 3-4 weeks) instead of receiving the order they have been waiting over a year for?, and how many thousands more are pissed because they have to wait for their multi-up to 5 extruder XL systems because Prusa is using them to produce the MK4?

P.s. I'm not trying to start crap, I'm one of those people.

Go re-read the blog.  It's not the same nextruder, it's a lighter variant.

RE: MK4?

Soo if I'm to understand correctly Prusa had an electronics components supply chain problem as their main excuse for the XL delays. They couldn't even send the beta versions to the testers until last month. But miraculously they were running "hundreds of MK4s in the company on a daily basis for more than a year." . And dont tell me its a different printer. They share the same 32bit board, nextruder parts, heater blogs and other parts. Prusa is good in making printer but really bad in excuses.

RE: MK4?

Like I suspected a few days ago, an Mk4 is much easier to pull off than the complexity monster XL, even if it is initially only shipped with single extruder.
Assuming this is not just a bad early April fools joke, I think the MK4 is not jaw dropping in any sense but a very good update to the MK3 to keep the base printer offer of Prusa in todays market relevant.

There are 3 absolutely crucial features: fully automatic first layer calibration with no user interaction needed (so no z-offsetting I presume?), a kind of input shaper and a kind of pressure advance. If those better stepper motors can really substantially reduce artifacts too the Mk4 could catch up again to the top league in terms of print quality.

I assume it still won't be the fastest offer but it doesn't need to be, it just needs to be decently fast with top print quality, good service and easy maintenance built to be supported and last for years to come like previous iterations. The price increase is a bit steep but I wonder if the Chinese competitors will also have to raise prices at some point or if they can keep pretending the current high inflation phase doesn't happen right now.

I would hope however that Prusa is also working on a new MK3/4 sized printer based on a corexy design. Such printers can be much more effectively enclosed than a bed slinger.

I haven't seen any reason to assume that availability of Nextruder components is the bottleneck in increasing the rate of XL production.  It's entirely possible...  But there are plenty of other components that could also be more of an issue.

That is the same interpretation I took from the Live Vlog.

RE: MK4?

In fact, the MK4 and XL were developed in parallel by two independent teams since 2019 right away after MINI was released.

And just for the record, they made all the promises about this release, because when I ordered as soon as I could and the MK4 was still in stock in the shop, they had it ready for pickup as of today (and I know another 3 friends, who have theirs ready too):
