Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

It would be cool if the printer could be turned of in a configurable amount of time after a print finished. For this the power switch would have to be replaced with a power button.

A third option of "one that works" would be good.

Yea maybe a printer that had the advertised features actually working, came with parts listed, and a few less bugs.

Textured bed, crash detection, & etc....

Whatever you do no WiFi/network connectivity (well maybe if you build the software on top of a popular Linux distro, e.g. Debian, so I can get patches from them), more Internet of Vulnerabilities devices is not what we need. I also would strongly prefer a UI with physical buttons/scrollwheel rather than a touchscreen.

I have been an admirer of my prusa mk2s. It has been without a doubt the best machine I have ever had. So I bought the mk3 when it came out, but I had to return it because of the extrusion problems. I have looked for substitutes to it and I see that there is a marked difference in quality and price between a basic range and a professional range. I think that Prusa could include two production lines, one for the domestic environment, and another more industrial, with high nozzle temperatures of over 300 degrees, closed and heated to work comfortably, materials such as POM, PC, .. It is a market that is letting go and that is growing more and more ... my next step will be to buy an industrial machine

the current screen is fine for most I would think...but it could use some improvement in navigation for the many menu items and perhaps a different control interface that utilizes something more than a single spin and push knob.... maybe a slightly larger screen of the same style though.

larger build volume would be the next logical step for an upgrade to the MK3 or perhaps a new, separate model that is just the MK3 but larger. I think a printer with the build volume of say... a Creality CR-10, 300 x 300 x 300 with all the bells and whistles of the MK3 would be an incredible printer if the retail price is reasonable. It would cover the needs of just about anyone and id personally love to have a MK3 with the same build volume as a CR-10.....

Volcano hot end....speeding up print times is a must as the tech advances, a larger build volume printer would absolutely need it to take advanatge of the higher print speed the machine is currently capable of.

enclosures are great if you are constantly printing ABS but id wager most people who purchased a MK3 are printing PLA, PETG etc. The Lack table enclosure solution is cheap and easy to do for the lower percentage of folks printing filaments that really need an enclosure.

factory enclosures, touch screens LCD displays... those are features of a higher price point printer that most regular users don't really need. The MK3 is solid as it is..... adding more unnecessary features that the majority wont use will end up pricing out a lot of folks out. These are items that Prusa could add a new model of 3D printer to their sales list, that is targeting that higher price point specifically.

Dual extruders. But for me, the main reason for this would be to beeing able to print supports with cheaper materials and/or use soluable filaments.

Mattias, have you looked at the MMU (multi material unit)? It accomplishes this.

Yes I have. But what I realize by watching and reading about it is that the MMU is not very reliable due to its complicated construction. I can understand that that construction might be one of very few that COULD work if you need 4-5 materials but mostly I guess it would be suffice with two and then a switching/tilting head would be much more reliable. Something like Lulzbot or others.
At least if the ”MK4” could be compatible with such extruders.
A solution similar to MMU v1 but direct drive and only two materials would have been something.

65% of those who voted disagree with you. 😉

My previous printer had a touch screen, I really miss it.

Having just finished the build a built having a fine adjust knob added to adjust the physical Pinda hight would rectify one of the more fiddly build items.

for the MK4 or MK5 I think it would be time by then (2020?) to move the controller board up to a Duet WiFi to have the overhead for future features.

Multiple extruders have their own problems. There is no magic bullet here, other than spending huge amounts of money for a professional-grade printer with a support contract.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

Having only used the MK3 for a few days (been 3d printing for a few months in total), I'd want:

Better octoprint integration (I print from SD for now so that the power panic and filament runout is handled properly by the firmware. Also, the Pi Zero W integration was a bad choice for performance reasons.)

I definitely like the responsive feeling of the current front panel. I wouldn't want a graphical LCD/touchscreen if it regressed on that.

I would have liked if the MK3 included a enclosure, though I can understand Prusa's comments about how it would affect the price and I imagine it would force the shipping cost of a kit printer to go up due to some larger parts. Possibly an option for a power supply that ships with longer wires so it's easy to mount it outside of a home-built enclosure would be nice.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

I waiting for my first Prusa to start with my son 3d printing projekts together ...
so i have no experience in use but expetations in savety ...
the printer gets his place in the cellar and needs to be monitored...

One Projekt will be (maybe in Winter)
- Raspberry Pi 3 b+
- MQ-2 Gas Sensor (Smoke too)
- DHT22 (Humidity Sensor)
- Relais Modul for Switch of 230 V in case off smoke
- Webcam
- maybe .... Webinterface (maybe Octoprint) if yes then only intranet and connection via vpn from handy if alam comes in
- Alarm by Mail

Maybe something like a save box as upgrade kit can be generated with somethink like that

Compared with a simple Web Interface where you can manage and see status (print / temperatures / errors) for maybe up to 4 printers if they are connected over usb to the pi upload a gcode for them, start / stop printing (Not sure if the pi is powerfull enough for 4 printers)
OctoPrusaPrint

No needs to change a display or concept, use what is allready there (if its not EOL 👿 ) and control it from your normal pc / tablett or handy ...
important would be that from standard every user must set a password 😆 and did not throw it open into the www...
And most important only the people that needs and wants such funktions need to pay for it and not everybody.

Cheers

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

Just came across this thread, and haven't read all of the suggestions yet, but I'll vote strongly against a touchscreen. Most CNC machines and other high end tools have tactile switches, because that's the best way to interact with the system. You don't need precision and haptic feedback when playing Candy Crush on your phone, but it can be crucial with a moving machine.

I have a Mk3 at work, and was impressed enough that I bought one for home. This is a fantastic machine, particularly for the price, but it can still use improvement. One weakness is nozzle cleaning, so perhaps a brass brush and and wiping gcode would be a nice addition. I think the removable bed is a fantastic feature, and look forward to wider availability of the textured bed.

One thing that might be interesting would be the ability in Slic3r to serialize parts automatically. If you could define a small area on any given part, and then "brand" the model with sequential numbers or letters, that would be very useful. The capability to extend that to a logo, say with a user-provided 3D model, would be really intriguing.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

to the post from charles an idea for better nozzle cleaning

(from a Printing Noob so please don´t hit me 😉 )

Teflon Coated Nozzels maybe (I don´t know if its possible and if practicable in reason of Temperatures from max. 350°C)
or
Nikasil Coating https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikasil maybe could allthough be interesting for abrasiv Filament

cheers

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

For me the requirements are

1 : Larger print area at least 300x300
2 : Replace the Einsy Rambo with something 32bit and with more memory - this may help the devs to expand and really sort things.
3 : Detachable hot end, or plugs at the hot end as a very minimum - no more fixed wires all the way to the controller.
4 : Improvements to how the bed fits to the rails
5 : No more Tie wraps !!!
6 : LED Illumination built into the hot end
7 : Update to include some of the latest Marlin improvements i.e. improvements to 'K' linearisation calculation
8 : Is it possible to work out how much pressure is in the hot end using stepper current and filament density ?
9 : Web / Network control similar to the Duet 2 - option not to have an LCD at all.

That's enough for now I think.

Not sure I'll be buying for a while though as I'm building a HEVO.

Not a good idea re the option. Makes troubleshooting if not impossible then a real PITA.

Re: MK3S / MK4 Wishlist

The LCD doesn't help this 'diagnosis' either, there is only very 'basic' stuff on the LCD. Anything else and it is Pronterface / Octoprint / Simplify3D and a terminal window. Take a look at the Duet 2 Ethernet / Wifi - there is little to nothing you can't do in the 'embedded' interface, there is an LCD available but it is an option - I see no reason why it couldn't be an option on the Prusa.

The addition of such an interface opens up the possibility of mobile device apps.

If you really want to get into the weeds 'troubleshooting' you need to be at a terminal playing gcode tunes.

Actually wasn't referring to your "weeds", but basic troubleshooting. There is enough info provided (rapidly) by the lcd for most to be able to determine what part of the printer is playing up (eg bed, hotend etc). Removing the ability to gain a quick understanding of a potential issue is not clever. Adding an additional piece of kit just to get that sort of info is also not clever.
