MK3S vs S+

Hello all. I received my I3MK3S kit a couple weeks ago. Due to time limits I’m still building it. I went today to the online instructions manual and was confused when there were a lot fewer comments than previously. Short story, after a lot of confusion I noticed I was on the MK3S+ manual and had been on the MK3S manual.

I have the MK3S.  I didn’t even know there was a +. It must have come out a few days after I bought mine.  I did a quick look and there are several improvements listed.

This is my first 3D printer and overall my first experience with 3D printing, so I’m pretty ignorant as far as what does what, important aspects of things, differences in parts, etc.

So here’s my question/dilemma: Are the +’s improvements substantial enough that I should return my kit and get a + instead. I looked and there is a 60 return policy so that doesn’t look like it would be a problem.  I’m just curious if it’s worth it?

I know that with any technology purchase eventually you’re going to get to where your new shiny device isn’t the newest or shiniest anymore, but it is disappointing when that happens a few days after you purchased the now older model, especially when I haven’t even finished building it yet.

Thank you for any info/advice.

Hi Hunter, if you return the kit now, you will probably go to the back of the queue, behind the black friday orders and christmas orders

I would suggest continuing the build, there is little if any performance difference. between the Mk3S and Mk3S +

the changes are largely intended to make assembly a little easier...

apart from the Super Pinda....   and the Mk3 Pinda v2 is not bad in the first place.

so continue and enjoy your new toy!

regards Joan

did you lubricate the linear bearings? if not now might be a good time

@joantabb

Hi Joan,

Thanks for the advice. I need to research the upgrades more I guess before I decide. Waiting wouldn’t be much of a problem.

As far as the bearings go, I didn’t have any of the lubricants people were mentioning in the comments, and every time someone asked specifically if they needed to do so there was always a response from someone at Prusa themselves saying that adding extra lubricant wasn’t necessary and that simply using the included lubricant at regular intervals as stated in the maintenance section is all you ever need.
It was certainly conflicting info, but in the end I decided to go with the official Prusa recommendation.  I’m guessing now, from what you’re saying, that that was a bad decision?

I’m not sure I could pull that X axis assembly (the two plastic parts connected with the two long rods) apart after it taking all I had to get it together in the first place.  Hmm, maybe another reason to consider exchanging for the + model.

Anyway, thank you for your advice.  Every bit helps!

Have a great day.

Hunter

Hi Hunter,

now that the X axis is assembled, I suggest that you use the Prusa maintenance regime, 'Topical application of grease ' on the smooth rods, until such time as you need to do an upgrade

the Y axis would be easier to lube internally,
the Z axis moves very little, so again, topical application would be better than nothing!
