Looking for adjustable diameter or radius finder

I'm looking for some kind of tool to find out either a radius or diameter of a curve (inside or outside or both)

I'm imaging something like the sliding vent-doors from movie aliens, turn them to adjust and find outside diameter of something round.

(and another to go from small to bigger to find the inside diameter.

Sometimes you just cant get a good measurement with a ruler/caliper due to lack of space.

In the past, for things totally different than 3d printing, I've taken a photo of the arc head-on, read it into Gimp, and sized a coincident complete circle to get the dimensions I needed.

If your wanting to measure rounded corners and similar then have a looks at radius gauges.  They are like feeler gauges but with inside and outside curves on the ends of the blades rather than being different thickness.  They normally come in size ranges, I have two sets the smallest 1-7mm and the next 7.5-15mm.  I haven't bothered with the larger set at 15.5-25mm as I can get a measurement as accurate as I need with a set square and rule.  You can get imperial sets too if thats what you need.

Thank you. I was using "diameter finder tool" and "rdius finder" in various combos without much luck.

I normally also do a rough sketch using a photo, infact i did this from a traced cardboard for this project, but i just cant find a good compromise as the edges is not streight (as i found out).

It is for a coverlid in the trunk of my car, but with holder for a tube of wipes and a couple of baggagestraps.

I managed to borrow i real lid from another car,, just to find the lids are not the same. My car does not have the slots for the pegs and lock, size is same tho. Guess it depends on the level of factoryequipment.

Anyways, thanks.

I'm not familiar with the program mentioned by jsw above, but it sounds sort of like a modelling program I use from emachineshop.com. This has what is termed a "tracing" mode where the design window is made "transparent". You position a straight-on photo of a part under the window, then overlay 2D geometric shapes to "fit" the contours of the part and export as a .STL file.

For those sorts of shapes, as others have said and as you've done with the photo I've been importing into Fusion and using it as a guide for the sketch in conjunction with measurements taken using a protractor at multiple points to aid accuracy.  It does sometimes take a bit of trial and error though.

You might find an angle gauge similar to this useful too:

I've found it OK for something like your cover but I'm yet to learn how you would do it to fine accuracy. I tried looking for engineering drawing tutorials on the internet to see if I could pick up some tips on irregular curves but haven't so far found anything that adds anything more than what I've already been doing.

Gimp is a photo editor.  Any photo editor that allows you to insert and measure a circle will work.
