Larger printer coming soon?

I am curious if anyone knows if there is a larger printer coming anytime soon from Prusa? (CR10 sized)  I am new to 3d printing and have a prusa mk3s and a cr10s pro.. the prusa just works so much better, it requires no fiddling around to get it to print perfectly.  I would love a CR10 sized Prusa!

I'm going to 2nd that request. I too would like a larger printer, 450mm perhaps? CoreXY?

No mention of it. Crickets.

People have been asking about a larger Prusa printer for years. If you're in the market for a larger 3D printer today, don't wait for Prusa to come out with one.

Given Prusa's track record, any new printer they announce won't be available for at least 6-12 months.

The MK3 design is about as large as it can get without a major redesign, so it's not simply a matter of making it bigger.

Why is that the case? Where are the weak spots in the current design?

I expect the frame and maybe the X rods would need some work for stability, but I wouldn't call that a redesign. The things I can think of would be:

  • Larger and stiffer X/Z frame
  • Longer and maybe stiffer Y end plates
  • Longer rods with the X and Y needing some beefing up to support the weight of their carriages so they don't warp.
  • Bigger Y bed and plate
  • Longer Z screws
  • Probably bigger power supply (for increased bed draw)
  • Minor firmware tweaks to adjust sizes.

Certainly a lot of tweaking, but if they don't go crazy (like 500mm on the X) I think the overall design still works.

Now if you go too big on the X you would have to do something about the weight of the extruder. That would start getting into redesign territory I think.

Well, you will need to up the rod diameter as well which necessitates redesigning mounts, etc - based on previous discussions you can't go much longer without starting to have detrimental flex in the rods.

I think the redesign comes in when you consider the costs/changes that it is simply more cost efficient to choose an alternate mechanical system and build from scratch (v-rails) than to modify the existing design in every aspect to accomodate the changes.

I think part of that comes do to the definition of "bigger". I think it could go 300x300x300 with minimal rework. More than that and I agree thicker (or additional) rods would be needed at least for X and probably Y too. The required carriage changes are still pretty minor though.

To me having to move from direct drive to Bowden or figure some other way to save significant weight would be more of a redesign.

Even the MK2 -> 2.5 -> 3 is just an evolution of a design rather than a wholesale redesign.

One could work on a larger design by using longer extrusions on the bear mod. Except one would have to respin a new printer bed to get a larger x-y print area and probably adjust the geometry of the mesh leveling (firmware change). Obviously the leadscrews on the z-axis motors would have to be longer, but again that is "just" a modification.

I don't have a CR-10 so I don't know the issues, but I wonder if using the CR-10 frame as a starting point with the brains of the Prusa could be the start of a Prusa-like large format printer. Or are some of the issues of the CR-10 due to some of the mechanical pieces (frame and drive train) being long enough that rigidity becomes an issue?

I would love to have a CR-10 sized Prusa Printer.  My CR-10 is constantly breaking down.  I finally installed a BL-Touch and the printer is kind of usable.  However, my MK2s Prusa is rock solid.  I would love the Original Prusa reliability in a CR-10 sized printer!

I put an inductive sensor on my cr10s pro, that with tiny machines firmware and using cheps (youtube channel) cura profiles and it prints decent.. but still not as good as the prusa.  I am sure with the right tuning of firmware and slicer settings it could print nearly as good.

I do have a question, anyone know why printing a part I made in tinkercad on the prusa takes about 7-8 hours.. the same part printed on the cr10s pro (cura slicer) takes 12+ hours at the same speed speed settings, ideas why that is?

RE: Larger printer coming soon?

Its probably the retraction differences between the cr10 and the prusa.  I also have a cr10s and it used to take a lot longer for the same prints and I used to slice both with SlicerPE.  When I got sick of the bowden tube and made the machine direct drive I reduced the retract values to the same as used by my i3 and now the prints take almost the same time.

Ahh okay, that makes sense, I do have 6mm of retraction.. was getting bad stringing unless I upped the retraction that high.  Do you know if there is a direct drive conversion I can use on the cr10s pro?

RE: Larger printer coming soon?

Not sure on the differences between the 10S and the pro but I used https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2798904   .  Prints in 2 parts making it easy to print and then just superglue together.  Was a bit of careful measuring to get the new length of ptfe cut down but its been working fantastic since.  I ghetto cable tied the filament sensor to the top of the frame and fixed the spool holder up there too.  Feeds perfectly.  I did already have a set of the wire extensions so not sure if my setup would work with the default wiring.

My cr10s is more like my prusa now as it has a spring steel pei coated sheet too.  Just missing the auto bed levelling and I've been looking at the abl as the firmware Im running supports it and the direct drive mount has a spot for it too.  I must say since I rebuilt it I've only levelled the bed once in 2 months so the need to fit the bed levelling isnt great.

RE: Larger printer coming soon?

I see where the Bear mod does offer a longer Z axis but have not found the longer Z screw motor rod combo needed to make it happen. The Bear frame (20x40 extruded V slots) is strong enough to support the extra size but not having a bed with the "extras" Prusa offers as well as flexing of Y axis rods may still be a problem unles you use larger dia rods and news bearings. Like some have said, you soon get into a major redesign.

You should look at the Zaribo mod... it does exactly that, at 300, 400, and (I think) 450mm
