Just lost everything

I was having trouble with a Masterspool print so decided to try a remix from Printables, downloaded it, unzipped it and deleted the original zip. My entire 3D printing folder disappeared along with it. I checked the server and it had definitely disappeared from there too. Every model I have ever produced went. I'd been so proud of some of the things I've done recently and it's all gone, including commissioned models. I've had a lot of trouble with Time Machine backups failing lately and removed the AFP support from the Synology NAS yesterday (it's been deprecated I believe) and went with SMB instead, so I think something must have happened in the transition with shared folders etc. FML. I recently won a grant to help start a social enterprise based around 3D printing but that folder had all of my documents for it as well. I guess I'll be starting again from scratch then. I suppose there is a lesson to be learned with diligently backing up anything that is important on whatever is at hand as frequently as possible. But still, it hurts like bloody hell.

Wisdom indeed and I should have known better. I had to resort to deleting my backups to try and get Time Machine to work at a time when some kind of failure was highly likely. I should have taken a snapshot and saved it to USB before messing about with it but I'm still confused over what actually happened.

RE:

There’s not enough detail to tell exactly what happened, but if anything disappeared, it is likely in a trash file somewhere.. I’d try to scour. Every drive has a .Trashes hidden file.. often accessed through the TrashCan icon, but there are other tool you can get to look. The only time I’ve had things disappear on a Mac is when I’ve overwritten the file of the same name with new info. I gave up on NAS devices quite a while ago. You have access to an iCloud account. That is the easiest way to back stuff up.. You get a bunch of storage (as far as 3d files go) for about $20/year.  Along with that.. . get a cheapo SSD or magnetic HD and use TimeMachine on that.. A more bullet-proof solution. The simple solutions are the most reliable.

Adding to Crab's remarks, the most important thing is not to panic or take wild stabs at it. Something like R-Undelete, making sure you don't overwrite the borked partition until you have everything.

@towlerg I've been trying to leverage the BTRFS filesystem to recover a snapshot but I'm struggling. I don't have the facilities to recover the drives directly because I don't have a PC that I can connect the drives to.
