How does MK3S do Z Homing?

Greetings:

I recently purchased an MK3S and I've been very happy with it.  Coming from printers that homed with endstops, I was in a bit of awe when I saw my MK3S home for the first time.

I know that the firmware is based on Marlin, and I did some research into sensorless homing and how it works.  However, everything I've read says to not use it for the Z.  Does the MK3S sensorless homing for Z, or does it somehow use the PINDA?

Hi Jrob,
the Mk3S, uses a Pinda Probe to the right of the extruder, it is a silver cylinder with a plastic end at the bottom, and a screw thread on the body, for adjustment

the Pinda is an inductive sensor, and it senses metal (And Magnets)

the pinda has a short sense distance, and when set up as described in the assembly manual, it senses the build plate, (Or the Heatbed tracks during XYZ calibration)
the correct setup, causes the Pinda to set the nozzle on the high side of a safe distance from the build plate.

YOU, then run a first layer calibration print, and adjust the live 'Z' value into the negative numbers, (Negative moves the nozzle towards the build plate.

When you have adjusted the Live Z  tot he correct value, your prints should adhere well to a clean buildplate, creating a smooth surface sith the lines in the flag part of the print, squished together.

Sensorless Homing is only used on X and Y axis

regards Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK
