How can I make a 3D print MORE Brittle ?

Yes that is correct. A property that we try to avoid in 3D printing I want to increase

I know PLA is known for being more brittle but is there anything I can do to make it even more brittle or even a material that's more brittle then PAL ?

The reason for this is it's a prop that needs to shatter into pieces as its dropped

Thanks

RE:

Puuh. Materials can be brittle but being able to shatter when being dropped is a tough goal for thermoplasts.

What you can try is printing PLA, rather with little infill and only a single parameter or maybe two. Then expose the object to strong UV light for some time, the longer the better. Curing stations for resin printer would be a possibility. Another option to try would be resin prints.

That should make the PLA a lot more brittle, you'd have to check if it would make it brittle enough.

There are also some UV resins out there which are known to be extremely brittle and they also tend to get more brittle when being overexposed with UV for way too long.

Very good suggestions shall have a play especially with the over exposure to UV and keeping things thin I may go down the resin route but as we know the convenience of FDM is far nicer

But thanks for the reply

Research "breakable movie props". In the past, I believe things like breakaway beer bottles in Westerns were made from molded sugar flurries. Breakable resins are now used but still cast in molds AFAIK. I couldn't find a resin type suitable for 3D printing.

Perhaps a different approach...print a mold and cast the object out of plaster?

Make the prop in the usual way.  Break it. Then glue it back together with sugar-water.  You will probably need to rebreak a couple in rehearsal to get an idea of the strength of sugar-water to use.

Cheerio,
