Got a bill for import tax from FedEx in the US. Prusa’s response wasn’t what I expected…

I ordered  Mk3->4s kit back in late October ‘25. This was after Prusa advertised “all inclusive” tax/duty/shipping in this pop up.

Screenshot

I sent Prusa Support an email asking, basically why I got that bill after paying for FedEx priority shipping (the most expensive shipping option). To which this was their response:

“Good day Mike,Thanks for reaching out. The taxes/customs/tariffs are prepaid only in case you choose to use Global-E as a checkout option, which was not the case with this order. As such, the standard process applies - you pay the associated fees directly to the carrier.”

So, my response was that nowhere do I see any option for “Global-E” as an option. Nor was that condition made clear anywhere during the checkout process. And as I just went back and looked at a new Order I created, I still don’t see any such option. Still only DHL and 3 FedEx options.

So I’m sure they will screw me out of this, but I’m wondering am I missing something here? Anyone else in the US get a bill from FedEx after the advertising was posted?

For the first time I’m questioning my loyalty to this company. Not that anyone there will care about a single customer, but it’ll make me think twice about ordering from them again.

If you can please DM me the email address you ordered and the order number and I can look into it.

I had a related but different problem. I received a bill from FedEx for orders I made in Aug/Sep and tried to pay it but couldn't. I went to the local fedex office and they couldn't help me either. So I ended up not paying. What is most annoying is it was just announced this weekend that the Dump administration is going to repay importers $166 billion due to the Supreme Court striking down tariffs 2 months ago. Guess who is not getting a refund? The consumers who had to pay the additional cost that was passed onto us by the sellers.

In direct answer to your question, I would contact FedEx customer service. There is a very good chance you don't have to pay this extra charge.

So much confusion around this as well. I read (but I take what I read on the internet for what its worth, which is generally nothing) that import taxes only applied to purchases over $800 US, which my order didn't meet. So i'm going to see what Prusa says, and then I'll see what FedEx says.

Much depended on the government rules and how they were changing from day to day at times.  De minimis was removed from some countries so any order became a tariff item.  The De Minimis was the exemption for under a set amount.  You may have been caught up in that.

So I had this looked into, and the main issue is / was;

When you made this order it was created and placed before (order placed on the 24th)  the Global-E for the US was rolled out (October 27th). Orders placed now are automatically enrolled in the Global-E program where it covers any tax / vat / import fees / or anything else involved with the receivers country of shipment.

Before, for the US for example, if your shipment was due any import tax, the shipper would pay for it and then include a "brokers fee" to the receiver. This was for the service and the amount paid. The Global-E system was set up to try and eliminate the service fees as well as the receiver knowing what extra charges are placed. This was added for the customers benefit and not for our own profit as we don't pocket anything from it. It is a 3rd party service that calculates all extra fees and is added to the initial cost of the purchase.

Unfortunately there was no way to retroactively enroll orders already placed by it.

So, you admit that Prusa made an error, and say there is no way to fix it.  Good customer service would find a way.

What I understood from Shane's summary is that the order in question was placed before Prusa even offered the "all inclusive" deal. If that was the case, the conditions applicable at the time of ordering will govern the contract with the customer. Not sure where you see an error on Prusa's part?

The tariffs were ruled illegal by SCOTUS you most likely do not have to pay it. If unsure, speak with FedEx customer support. I received a bill from them, tried to pay it, couldn't so ignored it.

This was labeled at import duty. Which is different from the tarrifs at the time. US deliveries always got hit with import duty taxes, even my original Mk3 and Mini were billed to me. My question was based on the fact that it was advertised as all inclusive, even though Prusa is saying it wasn’t the day I ordered. Guess I was imagining things… There’s a Reddit post showing the popup back in October. I’ll see if I can find it and the date it was posted. Not that it matters, as Prusa made it clear they’re not interested in helping.

Look at the government.  The rules changed so often. It was hard for the dealers, let alone the customers.  A business works to the rules in place at the time of a sale.  If the rules change, they don't have any control.  Prusa could have been 100% correct at the time you placed your order.  Once order placed, US government changed rules.  You have to deal with the fallout.  Not suppliers issues. It is the end user and the government issue.  I guess it is one of those pull up the boot straps issues.

I don't trust the GOV, and I work for them.  You are spot on.  The regulatory guidance probably changed.
