Getting a bill from FedEX after receiving printer in USA

I just recently got my i3 MK3s+ here in the United States, then a week later I get this bill from FedEx, which was used for shipping the printer kit to me.

It's a Duty and Tax invoice for $57.85, and appears to be FedEx asking me for more money from the shipment? It has a customs invoice showing the import, but I though the expensive shipping fee I paid to get my printer would cover this. Has anyone else received this? Did you have to pay, or at least provide proof that you already paid shipping?

It says clearly on the checkout page that you are responsible for any import duties:

Orders of $800 will trigger import duties to the US. And yes, I have paid them for all my printers.

If I already had the printer, I would be tempted to tell Fedex to pound sand.

RE:

Unfortunately, that will get you a different visit.  The tax is due to the IRS, and FedEx is the middleman.  Failure to pay it is considered theft.  You will get a different visit from an federal investigator/auditor in the US, and your wages can be garnished.  They can even force you to pay a fine, penalty, or forfeiture of property to pay off the delinquency.   Talk is cheap, especially when you come up against the US GOV.

Sounds like the US GOV already has their money though, so any issue would be between the recipient and Fedex.  FWIW we don't know if the charge is even legit, since OP didn't say whether he ordered the kit or the assembled printer, or anything else with it (all of which affect whether tax is owed).

It is legit.  There are many stories where people have refused to pay.  They paid more in the long run.

Maybe, we don't know how he ordered his printer.  If he ordered the kit and nothing else, his order value should be under the threshold where customs is owed.  If he bought it assembled, then yeah he owes the duty.  I would at least make sure whether I actually owed it or not before paying it.  Most of the reports I have seen here of people owing customs after having their printer shipped to the US via Fedex involve having to pay before they would deliver the shipment.  The fact that they apparently delivered the printer and then after the fact decided to try to collect customs raises my suspicions.

It’s actually more common than you’d imagine. Has happened to me with other imported items. A month after delivery a letter shows up in the mail with an invoice for a seemingly random import fee. In my experience, it’s rare to avoid payment. The myriad duty and import fees are so obtuse that most of us without an advanced degree in forensic accounting are better off paying the minimal charge and moving on. If one chooses to challenge it, do that without hesitation and document every step. Don’t ignore the notice, the government won’t just forget about it and things will just get more complicated and more expensive. Good luck!

Cheers

I've had it happen a few times. Less so with DHL, as they charge you right up front. With Fedex the bill always comes later or with UPS where you have to send them a check ($1.06 US last time). Cost of doing business I guess.

I just got "The Letter" from FedEx today after receiving my Mk4.  The funny thing is that this us the third printer that I have purchased from Prusa and have not had this happen before.
