Dear Prusa forum designers and maintenance workers.

Please, is there a way to IGNORE certain posts? That is, is there a way so that when viewing a topic or searching for something specific we can use details so that posts or classes of posts are not shown?

When I am watching the forum and scanning through NEW POSTS for things that I might be able to help with or am interested in, for example, I really don't want to filter through all of the Fuskian or Krlingznese languages posts - I don't read Fuskian or Krilngznese.

The same is true about being able to filter out posts for some topics or even users. Looking for unreplied Mk3x posts but being buried in MMU or SLA disasters. As for the expected answer "we have that in advanced search" ... well, have you ever actually tried using those "advanced" search tools? They don't work very well - and ignore any attempts at even the simplest search parameters - again burying a user is superfluous results.  E.g., in advanced, searching for the phrase "left nut" all posts with the word left show up, most from languages forums where the term doesn't even exist. "left nut" and left+nut is the same as left nut - and -left does nothing useful.

Anyway - the way search and filtering are configured makes them less than useful.

I don't think these are unreasonable features - they exist in most other forums I've been in.

RE: Forums

While I don't feel strongly about the specific issue you raised (I speak Krilngznese fluently...) I totally agree, the search function for the forum is close to useless. The absence of + and - operators and "" for match-all-terms makes it painful to use. On top, it delivers hits for each post in a thread instead of grouping them, which can yield unwieldy result lists.

If I'm looking for anything specific, I usually use Google with "search_terms site:forum.prusa3d.com". Not perfect but lightyears ahead of the inbuilt search.

@Tim

Don't you have the browser option to do an automatic translation for selected languages?

Up to now no one complained when I posted replies from German, French and Italian posters.

OTOH a better search function would be welcome indeed.

After you've used the translation tools for a while, you'll find they don't do especially well in technical chat. Too many idioms.

I search for items on this forum through google, the results are less then wonderful, but leaps and bounds over the forums ability to find relevant posts. I'm not saying this lightly and I like the culture here and most of the people, but this is the worst forum I've ever participated in from a feature stand point, and sometimes I get frustrated with it and go away for several days or weeks feeling like its not worth it to fight my way through it because of it.

I have to agree.  The software is lacking.

A better search function would help members like me who try to find previous posts with answers to problems or questions that come up for the newer user... There is a tremendous amount of great information buried in previous posts... it's just to bad it's so hard (seemingly impossible at times) to locate the information you are researching. So, the same questions get asked over, and over, and over.......

I have to agree.  Experience users are sometimes frustrated by the 10th post of the day asking how do I find or do "this".

RE: Forums

Of course given that many if not most of those posts Chuck was referring to could be easily answered by a ten second Google search I'm not sure how many of those people would bother with an improved forum search....

@fuchsr

You are correct and I must agree with you on that point. I'm a retired machinist and belong to other sites where I do more much more helping/answering than asking and many members do not attempt to find an answer to their problem/question by searching, even when the capability is provided.

But, there are many like me as well, that do use what search functions are there to answer/learn without posting a question of our own. I also like searching through previous posts when I don't have a question.... just trying to learn and improve my basic skill set.

Thanks,

Ted

3D printing is a constant state of learning.  I usually use google to answer questions I don't know the answer in this forum.

RE: Forums

If you use Google (or StartPage 🙂 and when entering the search phrase just add prusa and search generally picks up forum threads.

e.g., "how to use prusa forums" fills with Prusa site links then flows down to reprap ...

RE: Forums

The best search of the forum is to type "SEARCH PHRASE Site:forum.prusaprinter.com" in google.  Replace "SEARCH PHRASE" with what you are looking for.
