Fixed VLC unable to connect to camera
Not sure where to post this, but I got the error:
Your input can't be opened VLC is unable to open the MRL 'rtsp://192.168.178.173/live'. Check the log for details.
There are lots of questions about this on google -- but I didn't see the actual solution for my case. Which I managed to find myself. 🙂 So, in the hope that this might be useful to someone...
I had accidentally disallowed VLC local network access. On the Mac you can reenable it under
System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Local Network
which displays a list of programs that have tried to access the local network. VLC was set to Off. Setting it to On reenabled access.

Yes, this is a common problem with VLC on macOS. If you can't connect to the local network, rtsp will just fail with that MRL error, even though the camera is fine. It works again when you turn it back on in Privacy & Security.
It's also important to note that if you change the setting, you need to fully quit and reopen VLC. Otherwise, it might still not connect. This explains a lot of times when VLC can't open MRL on macOS.
