RE: Filtration for Printer

Hi Guys,

For 3D printer fumes filtration i am using the Odour Cube system.

At the beginning i needed to filter the fumes as previously i had the printer in my house. Currently i am recirculating and venting outside as i relocated the printer to the garage.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Hey 3deng,

I'm also using the odourcube system on my printer to manage the fumes. You mentioned that you were filtering fumes before, were you using a carbon module in your setup? If so how long did it last for?

I'm thinking of getting one but I'm unsure of how long it will last.

Still seems more efficient to me to relocate the printer if particles are a concern.

Anywhere outside the living space. Garage, shed, large dog house...

As for me - mine is in the kitchen. I like to watch it while we eat.

Filtering with fume hoods is very expensive, and especially in this case is not justified. The usual room filter in my case does not help much. I think this is money spent in vain.

@stirlsilver

Hi, yes i used the OdourCube carbon module to filter the fumes when my printer was inside my house. I used it for about a month, while printing almost every day. It worked really well, at least i could not smell anything. I think that i can still continue to use the same module even more if i decide again to print inside the house.

Cheers,

@robert-rmm200

So you definitely need the filter if you are printing in the kitchen! I would not print inside the house without a filtering system. It is not only about the smell but mainly about the emissions which are carcinogenic.

@marry_till

Hi marry_till,

In my case the Odourcube filtering kit worked pretty well, the one with the activated carbon, and it was a good price for value. Obviously you need to have an enclosure, however enclosure is a must anyway if you want to print ABS filament as the temperature needs to be around the 50degC at least, especially for the longer parts.

I am planing to buy few more printers and want to put them in my home office as i found it is not very comfortable to check the garage all the time, especially if i need to go outside to enter the garage and it is raining. So i am thinking to get few more filtering kits from odourcube. Probably this time i will add also the hepa filter module to the system. I will share some images when i get them.

Hi 3D eng,

Is there any flow monitoring on your filter system?

Some filter systems work well for a while, then become blocked, and ineffective.

I suspect a flow meter in the fan duct, or a pressure differential indicator between the inside and the outside of the filter, would help.

Hi Joan,

No, i do not have a differential pressure indicator. I suspect that due to low dust loads from the 3D printer, the change in dP after some time will be negligible, however this is a good idea to install one. Do you have such a system? Can you recommend dP indicator?

Thanks.

Well I for one am learning a lot of new things today.  I was aware of the grades of filters and the terminology aspect, but some of this is quite helpful.  Thanks @vojtech

I use an air purifier, it works pretty well. I have an EnvionIonic Turbo, but anyway if you are able to get a filtration system, better choose it.

@3deng

Hi, Ages ago I built one for my own purposes, it was not calibrated, in known units, I simply covered 3/4 of the filter area and measures the differential pressure between the exhaust fan and filter plenum chamber, and the open side where the filter input was open to the dirty air.

In hind site it might have been better to sample the clean exhaust between the fan and filter, and the open side of the fan.

I never notices clogging of the sensor openings, but it is a potential issue

RE: Filtration for Printer

Hi,

I built an enclosure for my printer too, mainly to get it off the desk and under the desk, but movable, so if something needs to be done I can just roll it to a better position to work with.

Anyhow, I thought about ventilation too. I my case I would vent the air into the room I am working, so sucking it out of the not-air-tight enclosure, via a heap and active carbon filter into the room does not really make sense I would say.

So my idea was to place a small air purifier inside the enclosure to circulate the air and filter it. Would that make sense. For me it sounds kinda logical, but don't know it this is really a logical approach.

Something like this for example

This is one I looked at too, as well as that one

https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/28534-enclosure-hepa-filter-system

My problem is, to get the right filters here in Austria via Amazon for example. I also want to use filters which I could even get in about an year or two 😉 Most of the systems I found are using filters not available any more or not used by any other well known/sold products in my country. Which makes them disappear quite fast.

This is why I thought a purifier would do, also because I do not see any real benefit in getting the air out of the chamber which is not air-tight anyhow. If something like a air purifier (mentioned above) would do the job, I do not need to drill wholes anywhere and most cases I could get simple replacement parts. But I am here to learn 😉

@herbert

Anyone interested in a build thread for that device?  It was hugely easy and satisfying build.  Heck it even works.

I think the how to is quite good, the problem is getting at least the filters in the correct size 🙁 I still searching them on Amazon Germany or Conrad Austria 😀

Anyhow, I am still investigating which solution would fit best, especially getting filters in Austria in a year or two in the right size. And therefor this closed box design limits me a little too much.
