Faster and nicer prints - just an idea
Hi guys,
I just got idea, if there is a way to make prints faster with staying on high quality of outer surface. Lets say I would like to have 0.3mm layer height for a speedy inside prints, but for outer paths i would have only 0.1mm. So the printer will start with outer perimeter printing with 0.1mm and prints 3 layers and after that fills inside with 0.3mm layer prints. Does it make a sense? Or is it already implemented in prusa slicer? From my point of view it has to be possible to do it.

It is already possible with the infill (combine infill every n layers). But there is also cooling slowdown logic (minimal layer time), which will treat different layer heights independently, so it may be contraproductive on smaller models.

That only applies to Infill. It does not apply to perimeters. So ALL your perimeters would be printed at 0.1 layer height. At the moment it is not possible to print the outer perimeter at 0.1 and the inner perimeters a different layer height.

btw all feature requests and bug reports need to be made at the github repository. As there are over 1600 open issues please do check first if something already exists. Its highly likely and as you can see even a 30 second search turned up 2 for what you suggest.

You are still constrained by the maximum layer height you can print with a given nozzle size. For good inter-layer adhesion, you want to keep layer heights less than roughly 80% of your nozzle size. Any higher and extrusions have a rounded cross section rather than the squished oval shape. This reduces the area of contact with adjacent layers.
If you're using a 0.40mm nozzle with 0.20mm layer height, combining 2 layers will produce an extrusion 0.40mm high which will be very weak.
This doesn't matter so much for infill which can have blemishes, but is not good for externally visible features.
You can print thin layers with a larger nozzle, so combining 2 layers of 0.20mm height with a 0.60mm nozzle is fine.
While you could use layer heights that are not an even multiple of each other, that would lengthen print times.
