facebook 🙁

Hi guys,

When I logged in to prusa forums, I was astonished to realize that it makes multiple requests to a variaty of facebook services (connect, .

So I was hoping to join a community working to have a positive effect on the society, I end up registering to a service that is another of the numerous services acting as a facebook spy, report them my actions and probably some of my data.

Is there a chance that prusa forums gets fully independent some day of facebook, or at least to make it an opt-in option ?
Meanwhile, I have re-installed ghostery to block those connecetions, to protect me when visiting prusa forums.

Sorry for the bad mood of this message, but I'm really pissed off to realize day after day that facebook is silently invading every little corner of the internet, even places where I expect to find a state of mind that is fundamentaly incompatible with facebook's one.

Hi Jerome,
the internet by it's nature is a cross connected mine of data that we are allowed to dredge from time to time,

Unfortunately companies like Google and Facebook have more competent robot miners....

Have you tried the Browser 'BRAVE'   it claims to block adverts etc. and it seems to do a reasonable job!

regards Joan

The practice is wide spread - especially on free forums.  Something has to pay the electric bill.  [shame]I use ghostery to block these.  The free version isn't perfect - I do occasionally see ads obviously triggered by tracking but it does catch a lot of them.[/shame]  Some sites offer for you to pay to opt out which is reasonable but I am unwilling to give billing information to so many different entities.  Would be nice if there was a global opt-out option that would actually send a portion of your subscription to those sites you visit materially.

RE: facebook 🙁

Thank you for your kind answers, despite the bad mood of my message.

Just to clarify my position, I fully agree that free websites need to display publicity: they offer a service that is not free to host, and needs to find a way to pay for that. It is the model on which the internet is based, and I think it is reasonable. (Note that as far as I have seen, it is not the case for the prusa forum.)

But I do think that having an ever growing number of websites reporting to companies such as facebook is a very very dangerous evolution of the internet. I think it is dangerous because it questions (or even deny) the free will of visitors to be enrolled in a business, even if they consider this business doesn't deserve any kind of trust, and is clearly not making the world a better place to be. As a consequence, I try my best to escape that logic.

You are right, I should not have lowered my protection (firefox's privacy options & ghostery normally). But I was really not expecting to need any kind of protection in the prusa univers. Back to regular settings.

Thank you again for your your answers 🙂

RE: facebook 🙁

For the more adventurous, get a Raspberry Pi and install Pi-Hole. It's free. If you change the DNS service at your router and not just each device, you ENTIRE network is protected. A Pi is less than $40. The entire project takes less than 15 minutes to complete, even for a non-tech novice. You can even 3D print your choice of a bazillion Pi cases.

Blocking the DNS even blocks the sidebar ads on my Roku media player, along with all the household cell phones, tv's, computers, etc. I finally got around to installing it on my system a few weeks ago. I LOVE IT. I think one of the best outcomes is that 99% of the sources don't even know they've been blocked. Using Ad-Aware, a LOT of sites would popup and admonish you for using an ad blocker. Not anymore. If you have any kind of problem, you can either whitelist it or turn off blocking for a selected time. Very well done.
