Dumb sli3er question

Seem to be printing fine with sli3cer press the export g code and go but I never use the slice now button. Should I?

Your call. It’s not required or anything.

Slice now just makes a preview of the sliced output. If you go straight to export you get a preview also, with more details than the slice now version, details like print time estimates and so forth.

I suppose slice now is marginally faster since it skips some of that processing that only happens at export, and doesn’t need to write a file.

When someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "YES!"

By default slic3r is set to slice in the background. You can disable it and slice with the button. Very helpful with huge parts so you can adjust all settings, layer thickness and so on without lags.

+1, and I don't think it's a dumb question at all. I've been "slicing now" to review layers in some prints before exporting & printing via USB/Pronterface.

YMMV.
