Contradictory Prusa Filament Settings (Or Inattention to detail on Prusa's part?)

Prusament PETG rolls suggest a temperature of 250 ±10.

Prusa Slicer for PETG is set to 230 ±10.

Why are the Prusa Slicer settings different from the recommendations printed on their product. Which is most correct?

Even more confusing is that Prusa has three presets in the Prusa slicer:

  1. Generic PETG
  2. Prusa PETG
  3. Prusament PETG

Is there some difference between Prusa PETG and Prusasment PETG? Or is this just inattention to details on their part?

I realize I can spend a couple of days trying everything. But what these contradictions?

The PrusaSlicer preset for Prusament PETG (a specific brand of PETG) is 240C 1st layer and 250C for subsequent layers. Different brands and variants of the same filament type (e.g. PETG) can have different characteristics.

Why are the Prusa Slicer settings different from the recommendations printed on their product. Which is most correct?

Use the most specific settings for your filament. If you have a profile that has been tuned for your filament, use that. If you have one from a similar brand use that. Finally, in the absence of any others, use a generic profile but be prepared to do some tuning as not all filaments are identical.

Even more confusing is that Prusa has three presets in the Prusa slicer:

  1. Generic PETG
  2. Prusa PETG
  3. Prusament PETG

Is there some difference between Prusa PETG and Prusasment PETG? Or is this just inattention to details on their part?

Before starting the PrusaMent line, Prusa sourced filament from Plasty Mladec that was sold under the "Prusa" label. All 3 are different variants of the same type of material. Just like you can get different red acrylic paints from different or the same manufacturer with varying characteristics, so too it goes with the myriad filament varieties out there.

I realize I can spend a couple of days trying everything. But what these contradictions?

Mostly due to inattention on your part. 😊

Also don't expect the generic PETG profile to be correct for all PETG available, I;ve just bought some SUNLU Black PETG and this prints best so far at 215 and under!, not sure what it is blended with but it sure aint just PETG.

To be honest, it actually prints quite nicely at this lower temperature and sticks together well (Layer bonding), and for a PETG it is quite opaque which is what I was after, oh, and it's quite cheap 😀 .

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

Good point. My 1st PEI surface met its end after a print with 3DX Tech Matte PLA printing at 270C. Definitely a lot of variations among filament types.

Ah, I didn't realize that I was expected to go back and learn years of Prusa's filament marketing history in order to use my brand new machine. Yes, now I realize that printing on a Prusa isn't just as simple as following the instructions and reading the printed materials. Thanks for pointing this out.

The hint is on the box. The ones that say Prusament are meant to be used with the Prusament profiles.

 Good luck with it.
