Coating from Powder coated spring steel sheet got off when I removed a model made by PETG

Hi, when I removed a model made of PETG from a powder coated spring steel sheet, the adhesion was so strong that some of the black coated materials got wiped off from the Powder Coated Spring Steel Sheet. Do I need to get a replacement?

I also found it difficult to remove some PETG and PLA residues even using 99% alcohol. What is the best way to do the removal?

It's always tricky trying to interpret pics online, but that looks like some filament may have been left in the texture. Try printing a thin square of PETG over it, letting the bed cool COMPLETELY (no cheating) and removing it. With any luck, the trapped PET will peel up with the new print.

@bobstro

That could be a good way to remove the PETG. What about the black rugged coating that got removed by accident?

I have used 3D printers from several brand before. They require replacement of the build plate often. For example, for the Stratsys SE2 Plus, after about 4 uses, we needed to change a new build plate. How about Prusa's build plates? How often do we need a replacement?

The pic looks like left-over filament to me. If some's been pulled up, there's ntot a lot you can do about that short of replacing the bed if it bugs you. At least they're double-sided so you can flip it for now.

The textured sheet should last a long time provided you take proper care of it (including letting filaments like PETG cool completely before removal). The PEI sheets are also durable with some care. My original sheet has one side that's now nearly 3 years old and still quite usable. I did manage to damage the other side with high-temp PETG (270C). The smooth PEI sheets can be replaced, though it's a messy job (though if you like the smell of citrus, Limonene may not be so bad).

I've had filament residue remain on the textured sheet, and in one case I had a few dots of it impressed upon the next print.

I agree with the 'let it cool' admonition.  After cooling, both ABS and PLA literally fall right of and PETg pops off with a gentle bend to the sheet.

Now I did have one bump on the learning curve where I ruined one side of a smooth sheet.  One of my first prints did not want to come off and I got impatient and used a metal implement for some gentle persuasion.  The print came off, but with a few patches of the 'membrane' coating of the sheet.  Had I simply waited for it to cool a bit more, it probably would have popped right off.

For Prusa build plates , is it a bad idea to use something like this to remove the models?

Ouch!  That's metal, and looks too much like the kitchen implement I used when I ruined the smooth one.

I might suggest printing out any of various plastic print removal tools, and reprinting them when they get dull.

I'm fond of this plastic razor. A plastic razor is ideal for lifting prime lines and removing parts without damaging the PEI. Along with flexing the bed, it should be sufficient for most prints. If you shop around, there are a few styles that match Prusa colors as a bonus.

[...] Thanks. Is this the same kind of plastic razer that charles uses for removing PC Blend?

The same basic type, yes. Somebody pointed out a nice Prusa-colored one last year and when I purchased a 2nd printer, I took the opportunity to "upgrade" to one with Prusa colors to keep beside my Mk3. I've moved the blue one to my Sidewinder printer.

@bobstro

Thanks. Is there a problem 3D printing a plastic razer rather than buying?

There are some nice printable scrapers. I used this style before I purchased the razors. They work fine, but the razor definitely has a sharper edge for getting under prints.

Those are the ones I mostly use.  I also have one that's much larger and resembles a small windshield scraper.

Best choice for me to remove parts from the building plate is exactly this STANLEY Blade

For more than 3 years I use this kind of blades especially for non magnetic (removable) building plates. I never destroyed a PEI-sheet with that - but day will come (only a question of time) 😉

But I agree and understand why people like to use other tools than metal blades.

Best regards, Clemens

I found fingernails quite effective in removing the residues but after doing that, my fingers became smelly even I washed my hands twice.

So, those so-called spatula especially made for 3D printers are actually not good? Perhaps at least for Prusa's build plates?

When I used those expensive Stratasys printers, I had to use a spatula to remove the models.

That's how you get grease off your hands onto the PEI. You'll go from trying to get parts off to trying to get them to adhere on your next prints.

Unlike many other printers, the newer Prusa's all have a flexible PEI build surface. I mean, use a brick if you want to, but most of us want to preserve the PEI as much as possible. Metal can easily damage the PEI build surface.

When I used those expensive Stratasys printers, I had to use a spatula to remove the models.

Did they have a removable spring steel build surface? If the print surface doesn't flex, it can be a lot more difficult to remove parts and more force is required.
