A person who uses a 3D printer is a...

In English the machine is a 3D printer and the person who operates it is a 3D printer. Very awkward, and very like Joe's t-shirt! Is there a better term for the person? Does this double-use of the phrase turn up in other languages as well?

I know that the people who operate metal detectors like to be called 'detectorists' in order to distinguish between the person and the machine, so maybe I'm a 3D printerist. (have you seen that TV show 'Detectorists'? It's a good one if you like minimal drama and quiet humor.)

"Printerist" seems a bit awkward. How about just "Printist"? Or maybe "Digital Sculptor"?

RE:

"Printerist" makes me think of a 3D printing specific Pinterest, but I suppose that would be Printerest.

EDIT: And now that I check, there is a Printerest on Pinterest, but it has nothing to do with 3d printing :/

RE:

You’re not a 3D printer. You’re someone who prints things on a 3D printer.

Or a 3D printer printer, I guess.

Context also has a lot to do with the English language and how you interpret what is written or spoken.

Its a tool like any other.  People are machine operators.  Some who uses a lathe is a lathe operator or lathe machinist, like a milling machinist.  So a 3dprinter operator.  Even someone who uses a traditional 2d printer is called a press operator (from the older term for a printer of printing press)

Certainly would not be called a digital sculptor.  There are many people that couldn't (won't) model or sculpt but are quite happy printing downloaded objects from online.

Yeah, I just realized that "PrintIst" is too close for comfort to "PrintErest" and "Digital Sculptor" doesn't seem to be specific enough. "3D Printing Engineer or Technician"?
