7 year Prusa owner with 4 machines giving a review of the MMU...

I have 4 Prusas. One so old I had to retire and throw a party for it. Made money and raised my kids on it.

I tried twice. I invested in the first MMU and that was very stressful. I invested in the second MMU2. That turned into sessions with my psychiatrist as well.

I let it sit there in a box. A $1200 paperweight.

Fast forward 2.5 years. I tried to revive the MMU2s after hoping the bugs were worked out. And...nope. Seriously I had to call dear ol' mum... "Mom? Can we talk a minute?' You will spend some evenings having this same conversation starter if you have Prusas MMU.

I think we need to come to the summation that Prusas MMU is never going to work and represents a dreamer not letting go of a bad design. And sinking his own company. History has many of these types in the books.

Sadly..while trying to get something to work, the Chinese...of all people... outplayed Prusa. And saying outplayed is being polite!!

Today I went for a walk. I came back and UPS had delivered my new Bambu. It took me 30 minutes to prep it and it is printing successfully 4 colors and making me money. A very good price out of the box...and NO stress.

Happy creating friends.

Just curious, how are you making money from your 3D printers?

And you NEVER posted about this on forums? I just hardly believe it....

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

I agree that it's a troll post. However, it is not far off of the mark.

My first printer (Nov '22) was a MK3S+ quickly followed by a MMU2S. I spent many hours of frustration finally getting the MMU to work to 95% +/- reliability. I upgraded it to the MMU3 as soon as it was available. The first print (the sheep) had numerous fails. Taking what I learned from that print I did a Linus model from Printables. It had 878 filament changes and completed with 3 change failures. That only 0.3% failure rate. Still frustrating but not bad.

A month ago my brother got the bug and started researching printers. Knowing he doesn't have the tenacity to go through the hassles I went through I did not give him a hard sell pitch for Prusa. He chose the Bambu and is so far very happy with it. He added a second AMU (?) and now has 8 colors to play with. It just works.

Though I'm thrilled with my MK4, I'm getting tired of waiting for its MMU3. And especially with the lack of timely meaningful communication on the status. What, it's been 6 weeks since they promised regular updates?

So I can understand with the frustrations with the updates, but just a few things. With the last few Prusa Live shows, a few of them were live from events and focused more on the events than following the regular routine, and normally updates are mentioned  in the show. We did have the current beta version of the MK4MMU3 at SMRRF and ERRF and was working away.

As far as the current status of it, that I'm afraid I can not say. While I am involved in the beta testing program for the unit, it is up to people who are a lot more intelligent than myself and know more about the machine to say. When the MMU3 project started, it was taking the previous model, making the hardware and software changes to it and then get it to work with the MK3S+, That was a success and then after that it was taking that unit and getting it to work on the MK4 that has a different control board and extruder system. That process has and will take longer than the turn around time for the MK3S+ version unfortunately.

I have taken your concerns and passed them along and will see about getting a current updated status on it.

Shane, Thanks for weighing in.

Mikolas talked of a new strategy for forming the tips on unloaded filaments. An accumulation of these strings is what caused the 3 fails I got on the Linus print (on the MK3S+) mentioned above. Perhaps if it works out it will migrate to the MK3S+ platform as well. Can you comment on this?

RE: 7 year Prusa owner with 4 machines giving a review of the MMU...

What I can and cant say is limited due to a couple of things, but the main one is that I don't comment on things I don't know about in case I give wrong info and then cause issues. Secondly I do have a NDA with work that I will not violate. I don't mean for that to sound harsh, but it is the truth. My own personal opinion on it is to keep in mind that while the MMU3 stays the machine, they are basically on 2 different machines. If there is an update or improvement on any product, that is also checked on other products to see if those changes can be carried across the board. For the MMU3, if there is an improvement that works on the MK4 version, it would be carried over to the MMU3 on the MK3S+ version.

If you are having stringing on the MK3 version, you could try adjusting some settings. There are various factors that can affect things, environment is one of them. It could be adjusting the nozzle temp, the retraction or cooling moves. While the MMU3 has a higher success rate than the MMU2, it's still a matter of fine tuning / dialing things in to get things right. There are some things you can check listed here as far as some settings you can check.

https://help.prusa3d.com/article/mmu-loading-failed_2135

and this one goes over temp and retraction settings.

Shane,

I respect your position and appreciate all the help you have offered.

Some time ago when I was fighting MMU problems I got Chat help. They suggested several parameters to try adjusting. They said that if increasing didn't help then try decreasing the same. Most of the time I had no idea what the suggested parameter actually did. It all seemed like Voo-Doo science to me. And there's no one size fits all advice.

Is there a single comprehensive glossary resource listing the various parameters and what they do? This could go a long way towards helping those of us that are relatively new.

At this current time, not that I know of off the top of my head, but I could be mistaken. There is a guide on Prusa Slicer here;
https://help.prusa3d.com/article/faq-prusaslicer_1789
But for something of a more comprehensive guide as far as dialing in filament and settings, It is a good idea and I can pass it along and see if it can be assigned a task and have one created in one way, shape or form.
