Pirate boat to celbrate my son being born

To celebrate my son being born and to make a nice set piece on the baby shower party, I designed a (Pirate) boat and printed it with Wood PLA.

I gained a lot of experience from this, not just from 3d designing but also how to work with a lot of 3d printed parts to make 1 big object.

Some key takeaways from this project:
- Wood PLA is expensive, so I only printed everything 1 mm thick
-- This in turn makes it very flimsy and breakable so I strengthed the hull of the ship by coating everything with several layers of epoxy resin (this was a big mess to do, but worked great in the end). This also gave the ship some needed bottom weight.

- Printing curved shapes that later need to fit together very thin (1 mm) is a bit of a nightmare, parts don't fit together well so I used Wood Filler to smooth out the major gaps etc. This worked pretty well.

- Printing it in wood PLA allowed me to stain it, which made it look like real wood after sanding everything down.
-- Unfortunately some leaked epoxy resin is clearly visible and the Wood Filler also has a different gradient, I couldn't find a proper matchin color and this was the best I could find locally.

- Printing flexible filament on a cotton t-shirt (for the sail) was surprisingly easy, didn't have to do any adjustments besides slowing things down and clamping the t-shirt fabric on the printer.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the result although I would do somethings differently next time (especially the curved shapes and making it fit together was a big pain ...)

I like the idea of printing filament onto cotton as it means I could do the same for a filter housing and have the cotton embedded into the filter.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

A little later, but I congratulate you on the birth of your son! A very nice idea!

Wow, well done job. Very cool. How much time did this work take ? I want to do something similar for my son, but in more gentle colors. Where to find instructions on how to do this ?! For example, for a cake I already have a very good idea.

@marry_till

all in all, it took me a couple of months.

However if you worked back to back and without any issues or failures (had quite some), probably a few weeks or a month.
I made this entirely myself in a 3d modelling tools so not sure if you can find something similar for what you want to do.
