Legendary Defender of the Printer

Being a bit of a Voltron nut I was thrilled to find Juri Pranjic and his wonderful work.

Waiting on my MK3 to arrive and printing other stuff first I had visions of printing his original Voltron at 200% scale for a ~34" piece of awesome. Running it all through Slic3r, however, woke me up to the realities of print speed limitations as I am not interested in spending the next ~400 days printing it all out 🙁

I settled on having a nice bust for now while I wait on his new version to be complete (Red and Green are done and he is working on Blue now). So here is Voltron's head at 300% scale printed with the 0.4mm nozzle with a 0.1mm layer height. I still have a lot of work to do, however, as I intend to sand it down smooth and paint it up proper.

The head piece (forgot to get a print of it when it was done printing) took 55 hours, the face/jaw/pin took 19 hours, and the horns/neck took 29 hours.

Interesting points (for me anyway):

  • Tip to tip the head piece is 220mm long

  • The head was almost unrecognizable due to the volume of support material which took a few hours to remove

  • The top inside of the mouth showed me what bad air temp control can do to a print (it was maybe 30mm off the bed printed on supports and there is lots of thread separation)
  • On to the important part!

Yeah it really begs for that, but my CAD skills are way too basic for me to have removed the eyes and turned them into lenses. 🙁

How about making your own Voltron action figure, with the separate Lions.

Unfortunately the guys MiniFactory page isn't active any more and the files are not available for download. I do, however, have the zip file someplace on one of my computers...

That's the one this head came from. I linked to the modeler's Paetron page in my first post (to give him proper credit). He is also working on a new version which is more of his own take. So far it is looking very cool and I can't wait until he's done.

I did want to do the full set of lions, but I want to do them at a high detail (.05 from a .25) and scaled up. Unfortunately Slic3r is telling me (and it has been pretty accurate so far) that it will take well over a year to print. I'll wait for his new version.

I will say that his use of "transforming" isn't what I expected if the head is anything to go by. To transform it to the head of the Black Lion you actually have to pull the jaw pin, close the mouth, and re-insert the pin. You also have to swap the horns/crown with a different piece. Still an awesome static model, just not a substitute for the real toys.

I've been working on and off with that same model scaled to 150%. It's been a fun build, one day I'll get around to finish gluing the pieces and doing a final paint job on it! Just thought I'd share since I ran across your massive head print in this forum hahaha

    Very nice.

Originally I was going to do the full thing at 200% with my 0.25mm nozzle, but the print time depressed me too much 😆

I'll save that for his new version I guess 😉

P.S. I have the Lego version too. He defends my desk 😎

This is amazing! I am looking forward to trying this at 150% as well but I wanted to use MMU 2 to do it. What are your thoughts! Also that collection looks pretty slick. I too am a huge voltron fan and my lego version defends my toy room.

I'm waiting on my MMU, but that is how I plan to print my Voltron when I get to it. As is, however, the model is not setup for MMU printing (I now understand soooo much more than I did when I ordered the printer and MMU in Oct!). Just yesterday, however, I finished prepping another of Juri's models (Optimus Prime) for MMU with MeshMixer.

I may do that for the V1 head parts and reprint the 300% head (though I don't know if there will be enough room with the wipe block for lion's face/head), but I'll wait on his V2 before tackling that project for the full thing. Hopefully now that I understand MeshMixer it will go faster than Prime did, but Prime was also only a single part (that I turned into 49!).
