I finally did it: Successful MMU2S print with ABS, PETG, PLA, PMMA and FLEX

My MK3S MMU2S was working ok with PLA. But with other materials it did not work well. I finally printed 5 different materials with success - including FLEX! Do not expect to achieve that with the standard MMU2S and MK3S though. I modded the printer heavily. I prepare the mod for publishing, this is just to let you know it is possible to fullfill the promise given by the MMU.

The part was printed with no error at all, it took about 14 hours. Here is a picture:

More details to the filament:

ABS is just a cheap ABS from the mystery filament box from RepRapWorld from 2017.

PETG is also just a cheap PETG from the mystery filament box from RepRapWorld from 2017.

PLA is the Prusa PLA which came with the MK2 in 2017.

PMMA is from material4print from 2018.

FLEX is Ninjaflex from 2018.

None of the filaments have been dried beforehand.

So you did print multimaterial with Ninjaflex and harder filaments in the meantime? Without intervention? I just ment that you cannot expect to achieve a success with the above MM-mix. My MMU2s works fine for PLA, some PETG and also some ABS - but only if the parameters for each and every filament are dialed in. I was tired of that to be honest 😏 

Back in the days I tried your script to help my PVA+ issue but it did not help for that unfortunatly. However, I appreciate your approach - I also use a post-processing script as one part of the mod 😉

First of all there is no critic on your solution/design from my side. Again, I would like to see details and maybe incorporate it.

I haven't tried to print Ninjaflex on my MK3s+MMU2s yet. Not even in single mode. My MK2.5s is doing that job right now. Had no use case so far where I had to incorporate FLEX material into another harder material. For all the others like Nylon/PC I wouldn't mix it with PLA because they need high heat. PLA would just melt and most likely jam/clog would occur when I try to mix PC and PLA in a 50C ambient air chamber. Beside of that I don't see any issues to mix PC/Nylon and ABS in a heated chamber without any fan on.

Intervention is part of the MMU experience. In the last PLA+PETG 20 hours print I had 2 interventions which were easily resolved and the print was successful. You're absolutely right, the filament settings need to be setup. It got better with the "s" versions but still the current hardware requires certain filament behavior. For me is the success rate and required maintenance is much more important then "no intervention" mark. And the current stock solution is already working pretty good for me. Actually the last time I had to cancel the print was because of the PC extruder didn't work out and broke in pieces. Beside of that no canceled jobs because of the hardware/firmware issues.

Anyway, there is always room for improvements. Looking forward to see your solution!

How can there be criticism if my solution/design is not known yet 😊, I did not take it as that. I just wanted to clarify that I address the MM-mix above and that I knew that you did successfully printed PLA+ABS+PETG already.

You are right with the interventions, it depends on their types. Still, I would really like to see the MK3 with MMU2S running as reliable as without the MMU2S. Hell, I had it run for a week straight through without even looking at it and took my finished part out in the end 🤩 . This is where I want to see the MMU2S as I occasionally need reliable timeframes.

It is and was nice to hear that the stock solution works well for some people, besides of PLA I had more problems than I expected and especially the filament parametering was a hazzle for me. I even had to do it for a different coloured ABS from the same brand one time... . This leads to brand and filament type binding and also consumes pretty much time.

PETG and TPU stick to each other surprisingly well by the way, yet the design incorporated a form fit nonetheless.

We also want to print shoes, so that is another. I would say that printing FLEX even was the impulse for the modding... . Anyways, I guess I will need to make a video so give me some time^^
