Hurricane Irma

I live in South Florida and Irma was the 13th hurricane I have been through since 1960. When power was restored this weekend I thought I would create a memento for remembrance. So I found the best satellite image I could find and rendered it in 3D Builder and used PrusaControl to set color change.

For reference you will see Florida in the upper left corner and the Yucatan Peninsula in the lower left.

Here is the original image

Here is the image rendered in 3D Builder and saved to .stl

Re: Hurricane Irma

great idea.

one possible upgrade... a green layer, in-between the blue and white to represent the land

- 1st "printer" TIKO 3D
- 2nd PRUSA i3 MK2S with MMU v1
- 3rd PRUSA i3 MK2S
- 4th PRUSA i3 MK3 with MMU v2- 5th PRUSA i3 MK4 (upgraded from MK3) with MMU v3 (upgraded from…

Thank you. I thought of that but when I looked at the layers, making the true land green would also create a lot of 'uncharted' islands in the water 😮
It would also print a green layer under the white clouds.

I am patiently waiting for my multi-material upgrade and making the land green will be one of my first projects for that.

Re: Hurricane Irma

I'm somewhat ashamed that it took me this long to realize that 3D Builder was actually useful. Thanks for posting this.

That's awesome. I had a similar idea, but as a litophane. I think I'll still do it but love the 2 color version you came up with. Care to share an STL on that one? Tampa FL here.

Boynton Beach via Coral Gables, FL here. Sorry about the Bucs last night.
I have attached the .stl. I actually did two color changes. The base blue, then a few layers of clear to 'sparkle' the water, then the final white. If you do only one then the blue to white change should be at 2.75mm at optimal 0.15 settings.

BTW - I just received my MM upgrade and, after calibrating and doing a series of 1-2-3-4 color prints I printing this tonight in three color to see how it looks with the land masses. Fingers crossed.x.

Update: MM version - Hurricane Irma

22 hours 8 minutes later...success! Except possibly for the new lake created at the Florida/Georgia border 🙂

Process:
In Photoshop I took the original image and replaced color blue with white.
In 3D Builder did a Height Map Image Import. That gave me the land.
In Photoshop I took the original image and replaced color green with blue.
In 3D Builder did a Height Map Image Import and then an Edit/ Planer split/Keep both. That gave me the water and clouds.
In PRUSA Control I opened the three exported .STL files and changed Wipe amount to Reduced to fit on print bed.

Printed with MakerGeeks 1.75 PETG Filament - 255/80 - Optimal 1.5

Okay, Now for something productive...
