RE: Fancy Triangle Ruler

To be honest: I don't use this Sharp at all. I still have it for sentimentality, but if i need a calculator i use my mobile, my tablet or my computer. What ever is handy.

The calculator has functions that most users never use or may not even know how to handle. It was well suited for my CAD application programming and research lab work. I still use it at home today because it is perfectly adequate for hobby and personal use.

What the Sharp can't do, of course - make phone calls and take photos - I do that with a cell phone today, too.

I still have the slide rules from my grand dad and my father.

For my studies the HP28c and the HP48sx were my workhorses. I still use them daily. What I love about them on top of RPN (reverse Polish notation) is the programming language that was an HP version of the Forth programming language.

I did my dissertation work programming in Fortran-77 on a Cray Y-MP. At the time it was mandatory to know the inside outs of the processor architecture in order to take the most out of the limited computational time you were allowed for student projects.

My garage too could be turned into a small computer science museum 😀

I see that a lot of us have an engineering background and finished their studies in the 70s and 80s

I loved the HP48Gx but my keyboard lost functionality (some keys didn't responce anymore). That was the reason for me to buy a HP49G - which has more functionality but an awful keyboard (rubbbbbbbbber keys ... whääää)

Normally keyboard problems are rather easy to solve. It's most of the time due to dust creeping under the keyboard membrane.

On my 48sx I have few columns of the LCD that failed difficult to say if it's just a problem with the LCD connector or a hardware failure of the LCD driver IC.

In any case I warmly recommend   https://www.hpcalc.org

It's a gold mine of information for programs and information on HP calculators (including service and repair guides). It's poorly organised but you can find about anything in it.

Thanks for the link - I did several repairs on the HP48Gx - but at the end it died. I now have the HP49G which is a realy good calculator with a very bad rubbbbbbber-keyboard.
