Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
Hi all, here's my last project. The chess board has been made in wood and all the chess pieces were printed in ABS and acetone smoothed. They are specially designed to be 3d printed and the only one that need supports (included in the design) is the knight.

The only one that need some supports is the knight, and I've included it in the design, so you don't need to deal with the supports into the slicer. Some details here:

looks good, if I didn't know any netter I would not think it hadn't been printed 🙂
Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
Wow, nice job! I don't play chess but that makes me wish I did.
Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
Really awesome prints. Great that you have made the files available.
Good Stuff,

Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
This is very pleasant to look at - I am toying around with a chess project myself and might actually use the pieces as a starting point. Very nicely done sir 😉
Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
Looks pro!
A note on knight without support. You could design head to look like it is rearing up, you know, like Black Stallion movie posters. This way you keep above 45° while looking totally intentional. Your knight looks like...well, not healthy shall we say.

Thank you all for your comments. It's really motivating.
I agree stephanpark concerning the knight, but I just wanted to make something very classical for the first try. And that's a good idea, I'm going to create another one that can print without supports.

I'm an engineer and use my two Prusas to print mechanical things (test fit mainly) pretty much exclusively, so I really like to see these artist uses. Excellent job you've done there.
Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
Very nice design and finish. Rhys.f mentioned, that the files are avaiable. I have not find them. Are they? I am playing now with acetone smoothing, and this would be great thing to work on.

Thank you, yes they are available, the link is in the video above. You can download them all on my cults account https://cults3d.com/fr/mod%C3%A8le-3d/jeu/pieces-d-echecs-chess-set for the price of a coffee 😀
You can see on my YouTube channel how I smoothed them if you also want to experiment.

Thank you carl. I also use my mk2 to print mechanical things, I've designed for example some quick release press for woodworking or an articulated box for my drill bits or even an adjustment slider for my domino festool 😀

Those are some really cool items you've designed there. I love the centre punch holder. Mine are just rolling around in the bottom of a drawer. 🙂
Here's something we'll launch next year:
As you can see the 3D printed version is used to test fit the parts before we (my company) pay for tooling. It's also good for sales guys to see a physical thing rather than just a render.
Unfortunately, these are my printers (1xMK2S & 1x MK2SMM) as work didn't deem a 3D printer important, but now they've seen what can be done with them I'm hopeful they'll get me a UM3 in the new year. 🙂
I also 3D printed the parts for this before tooling, but I don't have any photos:

Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
That must be very nice to work in a company like that. Prototyping with a 3d printer then seeing it manufactured !! Good job !
Do you think you'll get better results with a UM3 ?

Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
I doubt the UM3 is much better as far as print quality is concerned. We have a UM2 at another site and the Prusa MK2S is easily a match in print quality. Unfortunately, my boss wants something that looks a bit more professional than a self assembled kit.
I mostly enjoy my job, but it can get very stressful if things don't go as planned. 😉
Re: Chess set ABS acetone smoothed
Nice Chess set, looks like injection-moulded one. Would you mind, if I share the picture on Prusa3D Pinterest? Thanks
