Best print so far

Scaled this model up 280% from thingiverse. Rough size is 280x200x140. 23 hour print. .2mm layer height, 15% infill printed at 100% feed rate using Prusa gray pla. Standard prusa setting for pla. A few have suggested using a little higher extruder temps. Will try next time and see what happens. Next stop ABS.

Mk3 print volume is 250mm x 210mm x 210mm ?

Sorry for the bad math 😥 Embarrassment to the engineering field. Let's try this again. 7"x6"x6" or 180x150x150. Ugh. And I wasn't even drinking. 😳 Scaling the STL. file shows lots of facets. Really no way to fix the file either.

Meshmixer - free from Autodesk

Netfabb Basic - also free from Autodesk - just resist the temptation to click upgrade unless you are ready to sell your car/house/spouse.

Never do this kind of high level maths without drinking first, you could injure yourself 🙂

There are lots of different ways to smooth out a model, any decent 3D program (Lightwave, C4D, Blender . . . etc) will allow you to subdivide a surface in numerous ways.

Here, I made you a very quick example . . . original STL on the left, I then subdivided x1 and then x2 . . .

Thanks Lee for the information. My background is design and cnc machining. Solidworks and Mastercam. I'll dig into editing stl files soon. I have tried in solidworks but it takes forever to convert from point clouds to stl to surfaces. We scan parts and compare using a Romer Arm but when we need to convert the files to surfaces I send it out to a company that uses Geomagic. Usually the surface files come back very clean and are easy to machine.

Grab yourself Blender, it's free for Mac/Windows/Unix - and pretty much covers everything you'll find in 3D packages like C4D that can cost $1,500+

Yeah, I think there is a divide between the more CAD type programs and the more 3D animation type programs, they each tend to offer different sorts of tools, I come from the more the '3D animation type programs' side of things (used to be an animator), where doing something like smoothing out or subdividing a surface is - quite literally - a 3 or 4 second job . . . . but there are probably things you could do quickly and easily in CAD that would take me forever in C4D or bender.

Might have to learn me some CAD !

I was going to say that's why he's ducking his head, chin down to fit inside the print area....

Where did you find this "head". Can't find it on Thingverse...
Thanks for any hint or link to find it.

Re: Best print so far

I found it on Pinshape. Search for Zombie Head. If you want to print it as large as what I did, please take the advice of some of the post and refine the stl. Love to see the print after it is refined. The one I printed but you can see the facets. Not bad but if your going to print it might as well make it look good. I do not think it will add much time.
