3D Printed Dining Room Light MK II

Eyoo again!

After my mom "would you kindly"ed me into handing over my MK I for her new home in Spain I had to do another one for myself and while I was at it I obviously made some changes to things that bothered me with my MK I like the geometry not working at the necessary height of the lamp and the 3D Printed Layer Lines also not quite suiting my taste so here it is MK II ( Imgur Gallery with more pictures ):

Autodesk Fusion 360 workspace model

Color Coded

No Banana for scale

Ruthex Heat Inserts

Testing ideas with failed prints ( didn't make the cut )

Electrical Wiring

Lamp hanging

Lamp illuminated by OSRAM LED Vintage 1906 bulbs

Cheers! 😁

MKII is even more awesome than the first version.

And with a wee bit of envy I admit the design is definitely cooler than my dining room lamp design ( https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/english-forum-awesome-prints-hall-of-fame/feeling-the-urge-to-brag-ceiling-lamp-almost-finished/#post-235231)

@hawai
Thanks!

Regarding your own lamp, couldn't you have routed the cables from center to center instead from end to end? 🤔
I can kinda guess where you were trying to go with it but I honestly believe that the cable mess is kinda ruining it ( for me ).

Personally, I'd also have the lamp sections mounted below the ring ( still facing upwards ), not above it for a cleaner look as I consider the lamp sections to be the dominant part but as they are they're getting visually intersected by the ring being below them.

Finally, the deconstructed moebius band is kinda eluding me when looking at your lamp ( reminds me more of an Iron Man Arc Reactor ). Care to explain? Maybe consider 3D printing something akin to the Wendelstein 7-X's Magnetic Field 3D Model ( blue one top left ) and have a single LED Strip run along the edge ( which will create an infinite Moebius Double Helix ).

Hi Durahl,

the cable routing outside the ring is due to this being my first attempt at CAD/3D-modelling and contsructing complex structures (for an engineer this might not be complex, but for an idiot savant they are ;)). When I realized I was unable to construct internal cable routing I thought to just make it a feature and go bold with it.

The "deconstructed Moebius band" doesn't show on the photos as the lamp wasn't properly adjusted (which by the way it isn't currently either). The idea was to rotate each lamp spine a few degrees and by coming full circle to have the spines form a moebius strip. With the LED strips I used (random thanks again to inexperience) it was too bright when the direction of the light was outward and downward.

Your idea with the Wendelstein field is brilliant, can I herewith apply for a copy of the resulting files to do my own lamp print of it, please. Pretty please!!!!

@hawai
I'm no Engineer either... I just like to invest too much time into building neat stuff and figuring out how to design them in F360.

The explanation of the deconstructed moebius band makes sense BUT the way I see it you wouldn't end up with a moebius band UNLESS you'd do 2x 360° turns as otherwise you'd EITHER end up with one end of the single sided lamps connecting to the other facing the wrong direction WHILE actually being a moebius band OR connecting properly while NOT being a moebius band and for that you're sporting not enough segments.

Anyway... I took the liberty and actually created a Parametric Moebius Band Lamp for you in F360: https://a360.co/2UiL85F

The current Parameters has it set up as a 1200mm diameter Wendelstein 5-X but you can increase or decrease the amount of turns to any uneven number ( IF you want a true, one-sided, moebius strip ).

You'll basically be doing one of those Segments and repeat it times X how many turns you set in the parameters. Obviously one segment will still have to be split up due to their size ( unless you go with a tiny lamp ) but that is to be expected. The LED Strip you're going to install on a moebius band will go around twice the total circumference of the lamp so at a 1200mm diameter you'll be looking at a length of about 7500mm - May want to consider installing an LED Dimmer 😉

@Durhal

Whow, this is definitely beyond my minimal F360 skills.

The dimmer goes without saying. We're currently in the process of planning some major renovations for the room that has the lamp in it and there will be dimmers installed for every lighting circuit. This has to be done by a sparky(kiwi slang for electrician) here in NZ otherwise the insurance companies get a bit unhappy.

If I were to use this as a basis for a lamp I would want to construct a connection between the segments that they could be fit together without glueing. Something like sliding grooves (if that is the correct technical term). Another challenge will be the diffusors. Maybe there are low powered LED-strips in silicone sleeves available. But the again sourcing them in the appropriate length might be  not so straightforward.

Mounting it will also be a bit of a challenge as the room in question has a ceiling height of barely 240cm. Ideally such a bold statement of a lamp should be freely suspended in a very high room 🙁

Anyway, merci vielmal for your time and effort, this gave me a lot to think about. Should this lamp ever happen I will post pictures her.
