I'll defer to Guy for expertise, but I don't think a lack of better solutions was the primary driver. The lack of available solutions was what drove a lot of the solutions when the PPE shortage was most critical. I do hope hospitals are well enough stocked with proper equipment now that field expedients are no longer the norm. None around here (MA) seem too interested in 3D printed PPE anymore, which is a good thing I hope.

I agree.

I got a kinda handy-helper position for a few month in a nursinghome nearby last summer and by then there was proper ppe in stock. The 3d-printed was kept for backups.

Yeah, I assume hospitals are well taken care of by now.  I was thinking about the rest of us, especially now that there's more contagious versions of this virus that have evolved and no doubt continue to evolve.  I have no qualms about donning whatever maximum protection is available.  Even if  the costume does look a bit freakish, I don't mind if it means that I'm still breathing when this pandemic is finally over.  In my view, dead with vanity maintained is a bad trade-off. 

Getting my wife into one, on the other hand.... well, it has to look the part.

Earlier this week, Germany and France mandated that all citizens wear high filtration masks like the N95 in all public places.  

Better gear makes a difference.  Since the beginning of the pandemic, when I go out to go shopping I've worn a 3M P100 from my workshop  that I used to avoid inhaling sawdust and which is just slightly better than an N95.  In that entire time, I have yet to see anyone else using more than an "in name only" mask or bandana.  I think it's just ridiculous that here we are a year later, and the general population in the US isn't using better gear.  If everyone were dressed like the bunny science guy, I'd wager that the pandemic would have been contained without the 500,000 dead now projected by next month.  

Now California thinks it has an even more contagious version of covid-19 than the British version.  Why wait to get steamrolled by it when now is a perfect time to make better gear?

By one measure it may be 11x more deadly too, though, as explained in article, that may be overstating it because of confounding factors.

I allow myself to chip in on the usefulness discussion here.

I tried to make that point elsewhere already. The "top mounted" shields are potentially useful splash protection when the splash comes from the direction of the shield. Depending on the relative position of the health care person and the patient. With a single mounting point, that is also the pivot point of the shield you will always generate a gap in the protection. If you're higher than the patient then the gap will be at the bottom of the shield. Taking into account our natural response of tilting the head backwards and away from the perceived danger the gap will widen.
