COVID-19 3D printing resources thread

There's an ongoing thread over on Reddit on appropriate projects for getting involved with COVID-19 response. For those of you who think this is all overblown, we can laugh about it later. For those concerned, there may be some practical things we can help with.

I know Prusa's user location map met with a lot of concerns when 1st released. Perhaps they could cobble together an opt-in for people willing to 3D print healthcare-related items for the duration?

I'm within miles of where they took the first quarantine patients in the US.  I know there is no shortage of people willing to print and help around here...but I found these really interesting:

I'm still reading up on the MIT project and its distracted me enough that I still have an untouched MK3s kit AND a forgotten bag of Haribo.....

Is there a thread on these forums for links to designs for printing resources like this: https://copper3d.com/hackthepandemic/

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

Hi every body,

I'm just a newbie : don't know to design things, so I'm unabble to help.

I just want to post an original idea for face screen. Not so good that RC1 yRC2, but can be attractive for people.

The acetate screen don't fall down, the support is above the mooth and the acetate go up to upper the nose.

If someone want to design it, I put a picture I found on the web and above the original link

Your desire to help is commendable, but my understanding is that any such mask absolutely must protect from above the eyes to below the chin. Basically, anywhere particles from a sneeze can get in. This looks far too small and does not protect the eyes which are a huge vulnerability.

Press says hospitals urgently calling for community 3D printed parts, 3D groups say they're a waste of time

I'm located 45 miles west of Boston. I've read several articles stating the area hospitals are desperately asking for help. Checking Reddit 3D printing groups, they're actively discouraging 3D printed masks. Has anybody found anything definitive? Are there places (ideally for MA) to help identify ongoing efforts? I've registered at Matterhackers and a couple of mailing lists, but everything seems to be good intent. Last thing I want to do is hand a hospital a bunch of stuff they can't use, or worse that will endanger staff.

@bobstro I am in the same boat here in CT. I want to help but not sure how. I have the ability to design and print parts but want to make sure I'm helping not hurting. I am discussing this with someone and they mentioned the possibility of being able to sterilize 3D printed masks using UV light? I am unsure if this would be completely effective or if there's something I'm missing. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information online about the masks, what filter to use, ability to sterilize plastic, etc.

So I am no expert, nor am I a doctor........but it seems to me that as a whole, this is the direction the medical community here is going.  And since they have been the experts in previous quarantines as well as this one, I trust them:

https://www.omaha.com/livewellnebraska/unmc-experts-develop-process-to-decontaminate-masks-used-in-coronavirus/article_d6a8df62-3c58-51fd-97c0-05ec4cc2c8d1.html

So it seems that decontaminating the existing n95 masks using UV is working......and covering them with cleanable, cloth masks helps to reuse them during the day.  No 3D printing required.....or needed.  I am devoting my pent up energy to sewing.  Our philanthropic communities have had no issue providing most materials, but elastic apparently is rare.

My only thought to this would be to make a jig to bend copper electrical wire into "S" shapes to help hang the masks..since the virus can only live for 4hrs on copper.

What I cannot find is information on the specific lights they are using, but if it works, I do hope they keep the information within the worldwide medical community until enough stock can be purchased and deployed.  I don't want to read about people adding a few hundred bulbs to their stockpiles of toilet paper.

@nilok It seems like there is a ton of different options for "elastic band for sewing" on Amazon.

actually upon looking further for useable options, there doesn't seem to be much.

From what I've looked into it seems like the biggest challenges are these:

-Lots of concerns with masks (quality of filter, quality of seal, ability to sanitize plastic, potential for plastic to be more harmful than useful in hosting the virus)

-Challenges with face shields (supply issues with potential shield material, access to laser cutters)

Feel free to add other challenges and solutions you see.

All my orders from both Amazon and Ebay for supplies to make the faceshields have been cancelled, even though the filament was on route. They are going to make this difficult for us. I have an order for PETG clear sheets pending- IN STOCK- order went through...hope they do the right thing and ship it!!

Amazon announced last week they'd be cutting back all non-essentials. Prime delivery times are now showing April 27th. You should still be able to order from smaller sellers. Some are even competitive in terms of free shipping and delivery times. Don't forget the companies that directly support our community!

The closest I've seen to a viable use for 3D printed parts is on this page out of Madrid. In one of the hardest hit places on the planet, they are discouraging 3D masks but begging for help printing parts for visors. Even if you don't have the elastic or clear sheet, the frames are apparently helpful. They provide a tolerance test for calibration, a couple of STL versions for printers with different accuracy and general printing instructions (0.6mm nozzle with 1 perimeter is recommended). I'm going to play around with the calibration and STL to at least prepare to print some. I still need to determine if anybody local wants these, but I can gear up.

The page is in Spanish but google translate does a good job with it.

Interesting header on the GreenGate 3D page. They're printing the Prusa frames, as well as upcycling clear X-ray film. Something that might be available at many health facilities.

Does Prusa have an official project link?

I know Prusa is doing something - but I can't find a good link.
