X axis only partially works for a few seconds after bootup, then freezes

I had some gunk build up on my heat block and nozzle in such a way that I had to remove them for cleaning. The thermistor was stuck in the heat block so I undid the wiring for it, took the heat block out with the thermistor in it, cleaned it off, then reinstalled both of them and reassembled the printer. When I went to do a first layer calibration instead of a line I got a bunch of blobs in a vertical line. I realized my X axis wasn't working anymore. When I removed the thermistor I did unplug one of the fans (I believe the print fan) but never touched the stepper motor wires. It will be able to traverse the very end of the X axis right after bootup, but after a certain amount of time (or maybe rotations?) it stops receiving input. I also tried flashing the newest firmware on and a factory reset but that didn't help. Does anyone know what might've happened?

Smooth sliding?

when the printer is idle, does the X axis move smoothly from side to side, when moved by hand?

sometimes  lack of lubricant can cause this sort of issue.

Yes

It slides smoothly across the entire axis. I am convinced it is not mechanical since it does partially work momentarily after bootup as shown in the clip.
