Hot end partial clogs

Work a lot with PETG and prints will come out great for days at a time and then things degrade.  Start getting globs, under-extrusion, etc.  Typically a couple of cold pulls rectify the situation (or hot end disassembly / new PTFE tube).  Question is, do you find that if when doing a filament purge, the filament curls up toward the nozzle, it is an indication of a partial clog?

Yes, assuming the filament is in good shape and dry. That's when I do cold pulls. If the nozzle is clear, filament should flow from the nozzle smoothly and coil smoothly on the surface below. If it's pulling or coming out wiggling, that's usually a partial blockage.

It could be that you have wet filament or a dirty bed.  Have you tied drying it?

@cwbullet

Thanks I"ll try drying the filament.  Have also found that if the hot end isn't assembled quite right, it can be many degrees lower than set for, which causes issues.  What is you experience with the filament curling up when purged; indication of a partial clog?
