First Jam !!

Hi Guys

Well it had to happen sooner or later, after over a week of good printing this evening i got my first jam.

Went back to the printer which had started to 'screech', no filament coming out, otherwise it was trying to print as normal.

So as a newbie, i guess this is somewhere in the bowden or hot end ?

Tried to 'unload filament' but nothing happened (a bit more screeching 🤣 )

Again, as a newbie, what is the best way to sort this out ???

Thanks guys

S

Most likely the material have been in the hot end for too long, then the material breaks down and is no longer fluid. When it happened to me I did a hot pull, increased the temperature to near maximum and purged. Higher temperaturer mostly dissolves the broken down material.

If you heat the nozzle to temperature of material you use, and push from above, do you get anything out at all? Or is it completely blocked? There should be acupuncture needle inside bag with MINI accessories, carefully push it from the bottom (be careful not to burn yourself) and see if it helps release at least something, push from above and see if flow flushes out some gunk. If not, you will probably have to unscrew nozzle and take a look inside. If still not, disassemble the hotend and look inside.

RE: First Jam !!

Ok, thanks .....

Its quite late here (UK), so i am going to think this through and tackle it tomorrow.

My thinking is ......... there are two possible locations for my problem ...

First the extruder motor, which i guess has now stripped the filament to shreads (possibley the screaching noise), which could be why the 'unload' didnt work.

Second, the hotend clogged and blocked itself.

My thinking now says that both these locations will need attention

So i will open up extruder gears and have a look, then remove the top PTFE tube (between motor and extruder) and see if the fillament can be pulled out (in either direction).

Then heat up nozzel and see if i can pull the fillament out the extruder and/or use the needles to attack any fillament blob in hotend.

This is my thinking so far, would appreciate any views or suggestions from you guys.

Cheers

@steve-4

When the nozzle gets blocked the extruder gear starts to grind the filament as the filament cannot move. If you are lucky you will solve the problem by the hotpull without any need for disassembly, if it's not your lucky day you will have to disassembly the Bowden tube.

RE: First Jam !!

OK Guys,

Fixed it 😉

Just for future reference i was printing PETG and the 'jam' occured originaly (i think) in the extruder drive (bowden) on the Z-Axis

I took the drive gears apart and cleaned all the dust/grindings out and rebuilt it.

I also cleaned the hot end out and fitted a new nozzel (the existing one did have a small clog of burnt PETG)

Then i decided to do the two 'Mini updates' designed to relieve the tension on the Minda cable

Will fit them tomorrow and let you know if they work 😉

Cheers
