RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

I missed the time to edit, but when I flip the steel sheet it is better and it even tells me that I overtightened the screws. 🤓 But that one spot still has a bump and the heatbed is slightly bent - ofc I could undo the bolt a bit, but that would make the bump bigger.

Please don't stress your bed like that! Loosen that side until visually level. I have no idea what might be the problem here, perhaps damaged or poor SPINDA connection. I just don't want you to damage your printer.

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

I found the issue! I was frustrated as it seemed like the bump was between two bolts and I spent some time loosening and tightening them and nothing worked. While I was doing this mod I also relubed the bearings as they were a bit noisy - it did not help and I think I lost like 4 balls from the inside some time back... I will have to buy new I guess, but during the assembly I let one part of the U shaped thingy that holds bearing stick too far and it pushes the heatbed. Oh god I wasted so much time, but you live you learn. 😄

There might be two issues here.

1. You over squished your mounts. There should be about 6mm between your carriage and heatbed.

2. Your U bolt is not tightened equally, causing one side to protrude more than the other. It certainly appears so in your picture, but hard to tell.

I had a problem with this u-bolt thing too! had to remove my heat bed and file it down ever so slightly.

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

I just to make sure I am doing this correctly, since I seem to be getting different readings while doing the mesh bed leveling. Am I supposed to do it with the metal sheet or without the metal sheet? I noticed the instructions says: Remember to "replace" your metal sheet, does it mean "re-place"?

I wanted to verify since I keep getting different readings even if I do it one after the other, it tend to vary a little bit. also what it shows me in Octoprint seems to be different than what I see (with the same result) in the GitHub page.

You do the leveling with the sheet in place, then take it off, adjust the screws, put the sheet back and re-test.

I tried to keep my bed at temp while doing the adjustments so that there wasn't a cool down/heat up cycle to add more variables to the adjustments.

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

ok, that is what I have been doing.

I am finally able to print the pre-sliced S3D calibration (live z calibration) again, and it looks great. but when I try to print the 3x3 25mm calibration file, which I sliced myself, it seems to still have gaps. I can tell that the mod definitely helped and looks better, but why is that other file still printing with gaps, could it be a slicer issue?

RE:

Check your X axis next. If the Z axis leans to the right, it opens the X up out on the of its travel away from the Z. Just a thought as to the gaps be created.

No idea on model itself, that probably deserves a post on it's own vs the bed-leveling thread.

I also did the silicon mod and got a near-perfect bed level.

However, after a few prints it's not that level anymore.

So if you're a bedlevel-junkie... don't start with this. You'll be leveling your bed continuously

Mine was going on 2 years without adjustment untill i had to disassemble for servicing. I'm quite curious why your's came unleveled. Perhaps the screws didn't seat into the nylon on your locknuts?

RE:

I actually think that's the case.

I used nuts that are a bit lower in profile, but i think it doesn't reach the end.

Just ordered the nylon ones

Just FYI - that was reverted 2 days later

I don't think that will work, they have different numbers of mesh points I think?

EDIT: It looks like they added support at some point? https://github.com/scottrini/OctoPrint-PrusaLevelingGuide/releases/tag/1.0.13

Proceed with caution!

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

Yeah...

I wrote that PR that the author released immediately and then decided to revert wholesale.

It fixed some glaring issues with how the mesh was calculated that resulted in bad values being displayed to the user.

It worked great and allowed for arbitrary mesh sizes but relied on scipy/py3 and instead of making the manifest declare that the author just reverted the whole thing when some Py2 issue reports rolled in.

Oh well.

Py2 is and was EOL.

I didn't know he would release it instantly or that backwards compat with Py2 was concern, it was more of a "look this is a way better way to calculate this and you can use all of the data instead of just a few points"....

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

I finally took the plunge and added this mod. FYI, I had that Octoprint plugin, but it hung on me so I uninstalled it and reverted to the web-based calculator from the Github. The plugin seems to be aimed at the Mk3, not the Mini.

Anyway, now that I've run some other mods (Revo Micro, antler cooling) and built a Voron, this mod isn't so intimidating any more. 🙃 I think the results are pretty good.

I used wet and dry sand paper to shave a few millimetres off a lock nut.
