Windows 11 doesn't let me set Prusaslicer as the default app for .stl
Just got a new PC and for the life of me I cannot change it so that the default app for opening STL is PrusaSlicer. When I try to do an "Open With" it shows PrusaSlicer there, but the checkbox for making it the default is missing. STL arent listed as a file type I can change in Control Panel either? Anyone having this issue?
Using the "Set File Associations" in PrusaSlicer doesn't do anything either...

I'm not a slicer Fanboy, however I would certainly be looking at Microsoft as the problem before I would think it's slicer. Unless of course you are trying to use Slicer 2.4 Beta (something or another) in conjugation with the new (incomplete version) of Windows 11, then it's totally your fault, for not knowing better. windows is a paid for product, known for using it's unknowing victims to fix its software issues, where as PrusaSlicer is free, and says please tell us so we can at least try to help you.
Sorry for your purchase, better luck next time, I'm sure in about 2 years Microsoft will provide some kind of update to help you.

P.S. I'm a Microsoft user, this is their way.

RE: Windows 11 doesn't let me set Prusaslicer as the default app for .stl
I found this quirk with windows 11... The easiest way is to remove all registry entries associated with the .stl key...
There are 2 locations:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.stl
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.stl
Reboot
Go into Settings / Apps / Default Apps, you should then be able to add .stl and assign prusa-slicer.exe when you browse other programs.

Windows 11 is a complete mess but here's how you fix this, also this applies to any app that sets permissions outside of the installer they stand a large chance of being ignored. In the open with right click menu select Choose Another App, this brings up the full list you can then select your chosen app and touch the Always use this App box.

It is possible but I had to faf about for about 20 minutes to get it to work.
Possible solution Settings/Apps/Default apps/Choose default by file type. Or right click on .STL, Shift/Open with then choose another app, tick the box always use this app... select PrusaSlicer and you may or may not be good to go depending on state of tide, quantity of virgin's blood (/Rant all the usual snake oil need for this dreadful OS, wish I'd stuck with 10. The single most annoying thing is that it broke TClock /End Rant).

RE: Windows 11 doesn't let me set Prusaslicer as the default app for .stl
Came here to specifically say thanks for this. After having to reset windows after installing new ram, I've now twice had file association issues, the first I was able to stumble my way through, but trying to get the stl association figured out, I was about ready to wipe and do a fresh install. But this worked perfectly, will definitely remember this for future issues.
