Two part/object model, topmost part is making cutout through bottom part

Is there a way to have the top design not "cut into" the lower object?  I am trying to get it to where it prints the top layer in one pass and then start the design instead of it having to jump around the outline on the top object. I have made the model once as 1 merged item and as two separate items. For both, the designed is placed just right on top and not sunk into the lower piece. The image, figure its sliced from right to left, right being lower layers.

Are you trying to use both together as one print?

That can be done by loading the first, then adding the next as a part (rightclick, choose Add Part, then Load, and choose the STL of the other part). The top part would need to be aligned correctly then it will all print as one.

Apologies if I didn't understand your question correctly.

I am able to print as one, the images are that of both objects merged as one. I am trying to avoid having the design create cutouts through the layers.
