Support not generating propperly

Hello, I'm testing this prusaSlicer software after many years with Simplify3D, but I'm having issues with the support generation in prusaSlicer.

I configured a 0.3mm layer heigh and 0.3mm in z contact distance for the support.

The problem is that the last interface layer prints for example at 20mm and the first part layer is printed at 20.6. (Remember I configured a 0.3mm Z distance).

other support configuration are:

pattern: Rectilinear

Pattern Spacing : 2.5mm

Interface Layers: 2

Interface layer spacing : 0mm

XY Separation from part 50%

I'm using the latest prusaSlicer software (2.2.0 win64)

I hope someone can help me with this.

Best regards

Don't think you are going to get any joy on this.  IIRC there are multiple issues regarding this open over at github.  There are several threads here in this forum too about it if you can find them using the crappy search.  Have a read.

Its just the way supports are done using slicer.

@neophyl

I don't know if I have to thank you for your response because I found it a little offensive. I'm not new to the 3D printed world and I did a research before posting but I did't find the answer. If you have a link that can share please do it.

For the other people that see this post, I' attaching the slicing images as evidence of this problem, because 0.6mm separation between support and perimeter is a lot for defining a good perimeter.

Last support layer at 14.6mm

Useless support generated at 14.7mm

Empty layer in the support area at 15mm. There is a solid layer in the part as you can see the orange filament.

First printed layer over the support at 15.3mm (It's 0.6mm above the support)

RE: Support not generating propperly

You asked for information, I informed you that it is a known issue. I also pointed out that due to the terrible search function on this website that actually finding old posts is not easy.
Yet I spent my time finding some links anyway. I didn’t have to, I don’t owe you anything.

Then I read a response where you are offended by my attempts to help you. Great. Guess I won’t bother in future. I wish you luck in solving this, as I don’t think it can be solved and given how many years the issue has been known about and NOT fixed your chances in my opinion are not high. Of course it’s all open source software and you may be some hot shot coder who can fix it in the source code for the benefit of all.  I hope so. In which case I would thank you along with everyone else which is why I wish you luck.

RE: Support not generating propperly

As @neophyl pointed out, PrusaSlicer and its predecessor Slic3r are not the best when it comes to supports for large, flat surfaces. This is a well known and long standing problem as those informative links attest. Having spent time searching for this same information, I understand that the decisions made were based on the state of the art at the time. Although PrusaSlicer is among the most powerful slicers available, supports and bridging definitely need work when compared to other modern slicers. The underlying issue is that it tucks a layer of bridging underneath the supported surface that winds up looking crappy and throw measurements off.

You can rectify the height issue somewhat by using variable layer heights.

Other slicers handle this particular feature better. Here's a comparison of supports produced by ideaMaker, Simplify 3D, PrusaSlicer and Cura.

For the time being, I use ideaMaker when the appearance or accuracy of supported surfaces matters. (Cura's results are good but that example was marred during removal.)

Yes this is one of the issues / strange behaviours of Prusa Slicer (Slicr3r)...

Anybody knows if this is already  on the official Todo-List of the developers (I found many issues on github related to this issue, but all of them were closed or old and discontinued). It would be a very big impovement for the Prusa Slicer if there is a fix to this issus, i think!
