.step or .sat - import/convert file types
Hello Prusa forum,
What are the chances of Prusa Slicer adding ability to read/import .step files or .sat files?
Would Prusa be interested to create a converter to convert .step or .sat files to .obj or .3mf or any of the more common 3D model formats like .fbx for instance?

Regarding your question you should contact Prusa directly.
But you can convert STEP to STL and vice versa with the open source FreeCAD.

Thanks @karl-herbert
I did just download Freecad for this purpose - that's why I mentioned it here - wishing I didn't need yet another program... when Prusa slicer is such a lovely thing.
I have and enjoy using Meshmixer and Blender - neither can read step files natively.

If you don't always want to rely on other people for 3D printing, it is very helpful to learn a CAD system to develop your own designs. FreeCAD costs nothing and is relatively easy to learn. There is also enough literature on the web.
Here a link to the introduction and basics: https://www.freecadweb.org/manual/a-freecad-manual.pdf

Is that very difficult or just importing a file, pressing to buttons and a save command - I was looking for that, but I am not very good in FreeCad, as I use Onshape for my designs. I have to search on youtube.

There is a solution described to convert STL into Solid:

Clemens, please read the original post. No one mentions stl. 😟

Nevertheless an important information. Very few free CAD systems can convert STL to STEP in good quality. This is sometimes helpful if only STL data is available and you want to make small changes. I have often used this.
Better would be the original CAD with structure tree and history or at least a STEP file, but unfortunately these are often not available.

Well - I think it is not that dramatical, when a topic and the discussion do sometimes cover additional information. And even when you did´nt get an answer to your starting question I received a very important answer to a problem I am faced very often. So I hope you get the information you are looking for, never the less very important information (for some of us) was placed there for free.

Hi @sleepinggiant,
In my experience with .step or .sat conversion, you can simply use online free converter for those purposes. I am personally using https://www.converter365.com/ for these kinds of conversions.
If you need more help fell free to contact me. Good luck!

I have used this a couple times and it works more times than not. I have had a few failures.
