Simplify the internal structure of a complex structure to leave only the external facade?
I have a complex 3D file with a lot of superfluous internal structure, and I just want to preserve the external appearance.
Is there a way to simplify the internal structure?
(Forgive me if this has been asked before. In fact, I'm sure it has. I don't know what the process would be called so I can search for the answer.)

The file is far too large, but an analogy is:
Someone gives you the engineering drawings for a Mercedes car, but all you want to do is create a nonfunctional decorative model, like a Christmas ornament.

In that case I would select only the monocoque components and ignore the rest
