@bobstro

Unified log-in is an intended feature we worked on for quite a while. Just a few days ago we even unified the username and avatar across PrusaPrinters, Blog and Forum. I consider that a good thing, the previous solution meant one new account for every service.

I still don't understand the danger. PrusaSlicer has no control over the account, there is no integration at the moment. It literally just launches the browser with an URL.
When you're talking about someone distributing a modified version that does something malicious, how we decide to implement the documentation has no effect on that. Anyone can still edit the code to do whatever they desire, there's no way for us to control that.

And if our helpdocs get hacked, the PrusaSlicer doc link will be the least of our worries.

@bobstro

  • If somebody manipulates the PrusaSlicer code and distributes it (e.g. linking to it from 3rd party web sites), they could be inserting a URL that opens a malicious site to install malware, then has access to the user's browser (incl. Prusa web store info). This is made worse by the fact that PrusaSlicer is installed as 3rd party software and not "approved and verified" by Microsoft or Apple.

While I appreciate you taking your time, I don't quite buy into this argument. If somebody manipulates PrusaSlicer source code and recompiles, she/he could do anything. PrusaSlicer has a libcurl integrated, which could be used for any internet communication much easier than starting a web browser.

It is true that we do not sign the Windows binaries distributed on github. We sign Windows installers of the final builds though.

  • If the Prusa help site is hacked, the page those helpful links land on can be manipulated to point to malicious sites or to let the attacker gather useful personal information such as what's contained in the online store accounts.

That is true, but it does not make any difference whether that hacked Prusa site is opened by the user or by PrusaSlicer. Again, I find your argument moot. As long as PrusaSlicer is intact (signed, downloaded from a trusted site), opening a help web site from PrusaSlicer does not pose a higher security risk than the user visiting the same Prusa3D online help site.

I am not a security expert and people tend to have a different pain threshold in regard to computer security and security in general.

Guys, I'm not going to argue about this here. The sorts of attacks I'm referring to are widespread and well-known. Unless you can guarantee that your web sites will remain forever 100% secure, you should be concerned.

So what do you suggest? 😀 To never share links to our documentation anywhere because someone could hack our site?
I might as well stop writing it then.

I suggest your company hire a web security professional to review your code and approach and provide recommendations on how to do these sorts of things securely. The costs of cleaning up a mess can be expensive. Perhaps you've done this, but if so, you haven't made that obvious and people should be concerned about these sorts of things.

"Reading through this thread, I'm just really sad, that you think so little of us.
We were just trying to make accessing the documentation easier."

Can't say I blame you. It's not so much the details being raised (I think most security "experts" would rather if these messy user just went away) but the tone. If you realty have so little trust in the product or the company providing it (for free), why the hell are you using it?

I'm not going to express a view on who is right or wrong on this emotive subject, I can see validity in both sides of the topic, but it's sad that some of the posts seem to becoming personal.

I'm concerned that this 'debate' has resulted in this decision https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/5196#issuecomment-731576449 as it's going to be a nuisance for all users and probably create more bad feeling. Can I suggest a few alternative to see if there is any support from both users and developers, for a long term solution?

  • Reformat the text that links to the site as a URL as a default, rather than wait for the hover. This would also help people see where help was available.
  • Provide an option (in preferences) to open the link in the users default browser.
  • Provide an option (in preferences) to ignore links to the knowledge base.
  • Implement the linked approach but allow option to remember choice.

To the developers I would also say thanks for all the hard work that has gone into making the new version of Slicer so awesome, hopefully there is a way of implementing this help functionality in a way that satisfies the majority of the community (you can please some of the people.....).

Not sure what the issue is , I can change mine freely, they arent locked at all.  Post a project file that has the issue and we can take a look.

Thats why I asked to to save a project as a project should contain ALL the settings used, including the printer, filament and print settings.  When I open a new project those values are not locked and look like your first picture.  So something you have set somewhere is greying them out.  If you attach a project so we can look at your settings then we might be able to figure out just what is disabling them for you.

Sorry just noticed the attached ini file, will give that a go

OK, put a non zero value in the default speed which you can edit.  Once its non zero the rest become editable too.

RE: PrusaSlicer 2.3.0-alpha3 is released.

My experience with Prusaslicer is a young one, and as progress into learning how the slicer works I like it extremely well.

I have been playing with Ender 3 settings and slowly re-configuring them to work on my Prusa i3 compatible 3D Printer,

first starting with slic3r and finding that Prusaslicer has far more power to accomplish my 3D Printing tasks.

And thous comes learning the art of fine tuning Prusaslicer to preform at its highest level of performance.

RE: PrusaSlicer 2.3.0-alpha3 is released.

Hello folks 🙂

I try yesterday for the first time at all with Prusa Slicer 2.3 print XYZ_20mm_Calibration_Cube with Creality Ender 5, because I Order Prusa i3 MK3s+ which I am still waiting for and what to use one slicer for Prusa and Ender printer. So:

Cube is dimension 20x20x20 but the real dimension for this 3d print is  20,4x20,3x17,27mm! So Z = 17,27mm??

Why did this happen and how can I fix this problem?

I use CURA Slicer and there is no problem.

Thank you and happy Holidays 🙂
