Prusa Slicer reduces the XL multitool printer to a multicolor/multimaterial printer only - too bad!

The Original Prusa XL is called a MULTITOOL 3d-printer by the manufacturer.

In fact, at this stage, it is a multicolor / multimaterial printer rather than the promised multitool printer. But the culprit is not the printer. The culprit's name is Prusa Slicer!

By "multitool" I understand the printheads as tools (which coincides with the name, Prusa uses for them). But what is really "multi" with them? Yeah, you can use up to 5 identical tools within one print job.

And there is the problem: Theoretically you could put nozzles with different sizes into your tools. Why theoretically? Because Prusa Slicer does not support the tools having nozzles with different nozzle sizes: Crap!

My XL's predecessor, a Ultimaker 3 with Cura could use different nozzle sizes in it's two printheads without any problem. That was beyond 6 years ago!

Currently Prusa Slicer denies the XL a quite unique selling point, by neglecting the use of different nozzle sizes. Too bad and time to change that - high time!!! That would make the XL absolutely standing out against Bambu and others with multicolor capability.

Describe the solution you'd like

Make Prusa Slicer capable to support different nozzle sizes within the same print job! Don't loose further time!

PrusaSlicer already does have multi nozzle size capabilities: Here's a guide. There are updates/corrections in the replies of the thread since we can't edit posts.

You can even already do things like separate large nozzle infill that spans multiple layers.

Thanks - seems quite a lot to manage in Prusa Slicer to get ready for this. I'll probably give it a try.

I still think, Prusa should offer presets for at least all the nozzles they sell in their shop.

RE: Prusa Slicer reduces the XL multitool printer to a multicolor/multimaterial printer only - too bad!

There is quite a lot that can/should be done to even just the UI to make multitool printing better/easier. With the current system of 6 different nozzles in 5 different tools means you'd have 6*6*6*6*6 = 7,776 possible nozzle configs and with the choice of Input shaping means 15,552 different Printer Profiles; no way anyone wants a dropdown like that. Best 'solution' I can think of would be the addition of "Nozzle Profiles" that can be selected in a dropdown within Printer Profile for each extruder to at least make creating/editing printer profiles easier. PS also really needs a reorganization of a lot of the parameters to account for the power of a multitool. Either just wait until Prusa gets to it, or dive in and help with the programming. Takes time for things to get done. Personally, I'm happy that we can at least jank our way through the software with the hardware already in hand, rather than having to wait through more years of development with nothing in hand while Prusa perfects things.

Also all the 'presets' for the differently sized nozzles are also already in PS. You just have them selected in the configuration wizard so you download and see them.

Then the real tedious part is where you have to basically copy/paste those parameters into a custom Printer Profile with your various nozzle sizes setup. Most parameters are the same throughout the nozzles sizes. I think the min/max layer heights are more of a precaution than anything. So if you want to go the 'lazy route' the only real parameter you really need to change is simply the "Nozzle diameter" so PS can calculate extrusion stuff.
