BUG REPORT: Prusa 2.2.0 does not show Filaments tab in Configuration Assistant.

To reproduce:

1. Install prusa slicer 2.2.0 from scratch.

2. When asked to select printers, define only a custom printer (no prusa or third party brand printers).

3. Examine the list of tabs on the left side of the configuration assystant, the Filaments tab is not shown.

Reproduced on Mac OSX, but it seems to be a general bug, not considering the custom printer as a FFD printer that uses filaments.

Please report this on the Prusa Slicer GitHub Page, where the developers will see it!. regards joan

RE: BUG REPORT: Prusa 2.2.0 does not show Filaments tab in Configuration Assistant.

This is not a bug, its the way it is now.  The filaments are 'tuned' for prusa printers and so are part of the prusa vendor space.  As a custom printer is not part of that vendor space the filaments are no longer available to you by default.

If you install a prusa printer as well you can select the ones you are interested in and make a copy, you also have to use the detach from vendor space button in the filaments dependencies tab and then save it as a copy.  At that point they will be available to you on your custom printer.

I raised this as an issue during the alphas/betas but had it explained to me that it was part of a breaking change for the new vendor space process.  I also pointed out that it would cause issues in the short term for those that were not using a prusa printer and now that people are installing 2.2.0 there are more and more of these issues being reported.

Thank you for the explanation.  Do you know if there is a guide to creating a copy?

This is not a bug, its the way it is now. ...

I understand that the filament management systems is optimized to support specific brand/model printers but I think the product could have a better filament management support for custom printers. E.g. provide baseline filament profile that are not printer specific, for Generic PLA, PETG, NinjaFlex, TPU etc, they have different temperatures, speeds, extrusion multipliers, etc, or ask manufacturers such as ColorFab to provide generic profile for their filaments, they will be more than happy to provide to to promote sales.

The PrusaSlicer's bias toward specific brand/models that Prusa sells or accept, leaves out many other users.

Prusa, please reconsider this policy.

@prusa_jmt

Prusa Resarch have developed this strand of Slic3r, specifically for the Printers that they sell, additionally they have enabled custom printer profiles for custom users...
they do not develop compettitor's printers so do not know what profiles those printers require,
why don't you enable the prusa mk3 profile, save the configuration files, then re use them as a starting point for your particular custom printer.

@joantabb, if Prusa is open to include generic profiles for PLA, PETG, TPU, etc, I am sure both the community and the filament vendors will be more than happy to provide them.  They just need to indicate that they are willing to do so.

@prusa_jmt

As I happen to agree with you in the mean time I have created a filament config bundle.  Basically its a copy of the standard list but with the restrictions removed.  I've had to rename them obviously to not conflict with the Prusa ones but it should allow at least the basis to start from without having to faff around making copies and detaching them from the system presets.

Just download, unzip the .ini file and then go to File > Import > Import config bundle.  It should then import all the filaments so that any printer can use them.

Hopefully someone will find it useful.

This is killing me.

It is not about leaving users out. It is about providing profiles, that were verified. And we are open for any vendor to provide us with his vendor specific configuration including tuned filament profiles.

Once other vendors provide their variants of filament profiles with the same name, how should the poor PrusaSlicer know which filament you want to use with your custom printer, if the same filament is defined let's say in Prusa3D and Creality namespace? We made a decision that you have to pick one variant and detach it from the vendor, so it is clear to PrusaSlicer which profile it should pick.

I understand it works differently from the old PrusaSlicer. The way it worked in the old PrusaSlicer was more an accident than a design. We only offered Prusa3D profiles with the wizard, and users found their way around this accidental design to use filament profiles tuned for Prusa's printer with their printers. Now we want to make PrusaSlicer more open to other vendors, which requires some configuration change. And people are naturally opposed to a change.

I promise that we will think about a more convenient solution for PrusaSlicer 2.3, so an experimenter would be able to install a set of generic filament profiles even without installing some vendor's printer. Maybe we will provide a "generic" vendor namespace, we don't know yet.

I admit I haven't read this whole thread so perhaps somebody has already suggested this but if you select "Configuration/Preferences/Show incompatible print and filament presets" you should see everything.

@towlerg

You also have to click the green flag to turn it red to see the profiles.  Which doesn't help if you only install a custom printer as no matter how many filaments you select they wont be installed.  IIRC if you only select a custom printer the select filaments part of the installation wizard is not shown anyway.

RE: BUG REPORT: Prusa 2.2.0 does not show Filaments tab in Configuration Assistant.

I feel like Prusa is doing the right thing with splitting the profiles between printers.  My only complaint is the lack of path for those who used it before with 3rd party printers.  I think all it would have taken is someone to write a "Make your own printer specific filament profiles"  tutorial showing how to create a profile from a generic start, which settings "tune" the filament to work best with your  printer etc...

It just feels like a hole that people who read this thread will find an answer to but it's a strange "breaking change" that leaves people who had something function broken with no obvious answers.  We want more people to use this software it's great! please don't give them a reason to jump ship back to Ultimakers Cura where 3rd party printers are treated like first class citizens.  I think adoption in this latest release of the enders and other popular printers is a very wise choice.  Keep it up... Remember feedback is a gift from your customers and it's not meant as just criticism.

I have this checked but am seeing no built in profile.

Prusa people, you took a community driven open source software and now you cripple it for most of the 3D printers in the market. That's not cool. Please reconsider your policy and support generic filament profiles and management for the rest of the market.

That statement is ridiculously untrue. Prura FORKED an open source program and tweaked it for their printers, it is still open source. For reasons that I'm not privy to they also included profiles for several other manufacturers,  Slic3r is still available, you should use that.

@towlerg, you are right, they didn't cripple slic3r, but they are taking its fork on a proprietary path with features that exclude most of the 3D FDM printers in the market.

Prusa people, please reconsider your policy and include generic filament profiles in your slic3r fork.

RE: BUG REPORT: Prusa 2.2.0 does not show Filaments tab in Configuration Assistant.

@prusa_jmt

I would like to say that your argument makes no sense but I can't because you are not making an argument rather repeating a patently ridiculous statement.

Even though Prusa support 3 other manufacturers, they are under no obligation neither moral or legal to provide profiles for untold number of 3d printers. How much resources would you expect them to provide for their competitors?

Prusa have observed the spirit of any obligation they may have to slic3r by providing the means to create profiles for 3d party 3d printers.

Just in passing, if you feel it's desirable or even possible to provide "generic filament profiles" then perhaps you should embrace the open source ideal and create them yourself.

There are many slicers out there, maybe you should use one of them.

I'm done with this thread, if you feel the need to get in a last word, have at it!

This is exactly what we are asking Prusa, to accept generic filament profile from the community and from filament vendors and to enable the the filament manager for custom printers. Currently ProsaSlicer disable the baseline filament profiles feature for most of the printers on the market.

Generic is possible, if you check a few posts up I posted a link to a scrubbed filament import.  They don't need to be perfect, they just need to be available for people to build from.   I'll post it again, and no it wasn't an Aprils fools 🙂

Has anyone turned off the 'Suppress " - default - " presets' setting in preferences to see if sensible default settings are provided? Might or might not work...
